Ever since its launch some time ago, the BMW M2 Coupe has been garnering a lot of adulation and praise from enthusiasts the world over. While reportedly not as hardcore as the 1M Coupe that came before it, the M2 has been hailed as a return to form for BMW’s performance arm, and there are many who believed that it would soon be followed by a drop-top version in true BMW tradition.
But now, BMW Chief Engineer Frank Isenberg, in an interview with CarAdvice, has made it clear that such a model has no place in the manufacturer's lineup. The reason being that the M235i convertible already exists.
“We need to keep it as purist as we did with the 1 Series M Coupe,” Isenberg said. “We’ve got such a nice M235i Convertible. And convertibles are not for racetracks, they’re for cruising.”
Isenberg’s statement is a clear indicator that BMW recognizes the M2 as the true enthusiast’s choice, combining both performance and driver engagement at the highest level. But then, interestingly, he added, “We may look at more variants of the M2, but for now, it remains a two-door.” It is also worth noting that BMW didn’t have any problems doing a heavy, folding hardtop version of its M4 and an ultra-grand-touring M6 Convertible.
In its current couple guise, the M2 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine that churns out 370 horsepower and 465Nm of torque.
