Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.4 GTX. However, unlike the Polo GT TSI, updates on the ID.4 GTX aren’t just limited cosmetically.
Until now, the all-electric SUV had only a 204PS electric motor that drove the rear wheels. All that has changed with the GTX, which is the first performance-oriented electric from the German carmaker.
The GTX has an electric motor on its front and rear axles, effectively making it an all-wheel drive. It churns out 299PS, a whopping 95PS more than the standard ID.4. Performance has improved, too, as the GTX can go from 0-100kmph in 6.3 seconds, a full 2.2 seconds quicker than the RWD model. Its top speed is electronically limited to 180kmph.
For all it can do, the GTX is not only about its on-road prowess. Thanks to it being an all-wheel drive, the SUV can be trusted with mild off-roading too. In fact, during the unveiling event, Volkswagen claimed the ID.4 effortlessly climbed a ramp inclined at 37.5 degrees. Sure, not the most practical off-road test, but we’ll let it pass.

The new ‘sport flagship’ packs a range of cosmetic updates, including a sportier front bumper (with integrated Golf GTI-like honeycomb mesh DRL), a restyled rear bumper, and X-shaped design element in the tail lamps. Also, the GTX badge and rear spoiler are finished in black, making for a fantastic contrast to the red body shade.
Inside the cabin, there’s generous use of the GTX badge (you find it on the steering wheel, door sills, front seats), almost reminding you that you’re driving a sporty, performance-focused SUV. The dashboard has a similar layout to the standard model and is finished in dark blue (with contrasting red stitching). The red ambient lighting should be a visual treat, especially at night.
The ID.4 GTX will go on sale in Europe, starting at 50,415 Euros (Rs 45.28 lakh*). Its rivals include the Skoda Enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Tesla Model Y.
