There was no dearth of happenings in motorsport the past week to satiate your racing fix starting with Formula One, as well as our Indian presence in F2 and F3 at Silverstone. Aside from that was Formula E racing at Marrakesh. Here’s a rundown of everything that happened:
Formula One
The 2022 Formula One Silverstone Grand Prix had everything, ranging from crazy crashes, intense battles up and down the field as well as controversial decisions. When the dust settled, it was Carlos Sainz taking his maiden Formula One win not only for himself, but for Ferrari as well. Coming home in second place was Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez after dropping to 17th place on the opening lap, with home hero and seven-time champion, Lewis Hamilton finishing third for Mercedes.
With Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc having damage limitation races, Perez and Sainz make up some ground in the drivers standings on their teammates.
Formula 2
Prema Racing’s Jehan Daruvala had a damage limitation in the seventh round of the season at Silverstone. While the Indian started on reverse grid pole position for the sprint race and was in control in the opening laps of the race, Daruvala faded away and had to settle for eighth position. In the feature race, starting 10th, the Indian driver made use of an unconventional tyre strategy to recover up to seventh place. This run of results dropped him down to fourth position in the standings.
Formula 3
Kush Maini had a mixed bag of results in Silverstone, by finishing fourth in the first race of the weekend. While the Indian driver started 10th in the second race, he dropped to 22nd due to a few unfortunate incidents. Nevertheless its another decent haul of points for the Indian driver in his rookie F3 campaign.
Formula E
The tenth round of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship saw an intense battle for the win right from start to finish at Marrakesh. In the end it was ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara who staved off an onslaught from the pole-sitting DS TeCheetah duo of António Félix da Costa and at some stages Jean Eric Vergne to take his third win of the season. Da Costa crossed the finish line in second place, with Mitch Evans taking a last lap third place finish for Jaguar TCS Racing. This win takes Mortara to the top of the drivers standings with an 11-point gap to Vergne.
Off-track, the calendar for Season 9 was revealed with India officially confirmed to make its Formula E debut. The country will host the fourth round of the season at Hyderabad scheduled for February 11. The venue will be a 2.37km street circuit that’ll run through Lumbini Park, alongside the Hussain Sagar Lake.
The following week will see Formula One, F2 and F3 back racing at Austria, with the FIA World Endurance Racing Championship season resuming at Monza. The Extreme E season will also resume at Sarania.
