It is a step up from the car it replaces thanks to its styling, performance, and premium cabin

The Skoda Slavia has finally made its world premiere ahead of its market arrival in the first quarter of 2022. It is the replacement for the Rapid as Skoda’s entry-level sedan. Skoda has already opened the pre-orders for the Slavia for Rs 11,000 with prices to be announced in March next year.

Let’s get into the details of the production-spec Slavia, starting with its dimensions. It is the second Skoda model based on the localised MQB A0-IN platform after the Kushaq. The Slavia is 4.54m long, 1.75m wide, 1.48m tall and sports the same 2.65m long wheelbase as the Kushaq. It’s also bigger than the Rapid in every dimension, which should make the Slavia roomier as well. On paper, its size is on par with the fifth-gen Honda City.

In terms of design, the Slavia shares the same design language as the Octavia and Superb. The most dominating element of the front end is the wide butterfly grille flanked by sleek crystalline LED headlights with integrated L-shaped LED daytime running lights. The overall shape of the front bumper is quite sporty too, with its various angles, inserts and blacked-out details.

The rear-end styling of the Slavia is its most mature bit of design, with premium styling details like the split LED tail lamps and broad bumper design. It still has sporty elements like the spoiler sculpted into the bootlid, the bottom edge of the bumper and the black insert that connects the rear deflectors. The boot space of the Slavia is rated at 521 litres, which is the most spacious in the segment.

Skoda seems to have taken a more practical route by giving the Slavia sufficient ground clearance to deal with Indian road conditions. It rides on 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels which are stylish but seen from the side, they do look a bit small for the car’s proportions.

The cabin is also a highlight of the Skoda Slavia, with its premium finish and minimalistic design. Some of the features are similar to or same as the ones offered on the Kushaq which includes the two-spoke steering wheel, central infotainment display and touch-enabled climate controls. The driver’s line of sight remains uninterrupted thanks to the central display being positioned below the top of the dashboard, with the central AC vents underneath it.

It is offered with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system which gets Skoda Apps and connected car tech. The Slavia also offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging too.

The Slavia takes a step ahead of the Kushaq in terms of premium features thanks to the digital instrument cluster. It’s not the top-spec virtual cockpit you’d find on more expensive models like the Octavia and Superb, but it does have an 8-inch display with various bits of information to cycle through.

Skoda offers the Slavia with ventilated front seats for added comfort of the front occupants. Perhaps the only premium feature missing here is the lack of a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It also gets the now obligatory sunroof which does serve the purpose of making the cabin seem more spacious with more light coming in.

The Slavia’s rear bench has adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts for all three seats. There is also a fold-out armrest in the centre. For added comfort, it also gets rear AC vents with USB-C ports underneath. We expect the larger dimensions of the Slavia to make for a better experience for the rear passengers.

The Slavia gets the same turbo-petrol powertrain options as the Kushaq: 1-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI. Both will be available with a 6-speed manual but with different automatic transmission options - 6-speed automatic for the smaller engine and 7-speed DSG for the larger one. With the 1.5-litre TSI rated at 150PS/250Nm, it’s the most powerful sedan in the segment.

The Skoda Slavia’s prices are expected to start from Rs 10 lakh as a direct rival to other premium contenders of the segment, the Honda City and Hyundai Verna
