Renault India’s been stirring up quite a storm behind the scenes

Renault Duster

Renault India is now gearing up to launch the Duster later this month, and amid all the fanfare and hype, there is one important question on our minds. Why so late? To find out, we got some key insights into what has gone into its development, and these are our findings:

Brand-New Platform, But Why?

Introduced globally in 2023, this generation of the Duster has come to India nearly 3 years later. But what you wouldn’t know is that the Indian-spec of the SUV is based on an all-new R-GMP platform instead of the global Duster, which is underpinned by the CMF-B platform.

But why was this change needed? One word– Modularity. The global platform simply wasn’t flexible enough, so Renault went back to the drawing board for this spanking new Duster for India.

What Is It Capable Of?

This new platform also has the ability to accommodate a wide range of products, measuring sub-4-metre to 4.7 metres, with 5-, 6- and 7-seater layouts. It can also underpin several body styles, including SUVs, MPVs and even sedans if needed.

Renault has also engineered it such that the products based on it can take power from ICE, CNG, flex-fuel, BEV and HEV powertrains, which significantly future-proofs it as well. Talking of future-proofing, the 1.3-litre mild-hybrid turbo-petrol motor in the new Duster is already compatible with BS7 norms too, which will make the transition very easy whenever the updated norms come into effect.

Off-road enthusiasts can also rejoice as this platform opens up possibilities of 4x2, 4x4 and even electrically-assisted 4WD drivetrains in the future.

India-Specific Changes

If you are reading till now, you would know that the Indian Duster will be quite different from the global version. But there are also a few changes underneath that Renault has made to suit our conditions. These include:

  • 12 ADAS features: Specifically tuned for Indian environments

  • Largest AC compressor in the segment: Suitable for our hot and tropical climate

  • 12 Parking sensors: Including one on each wheel arch

  • Low steel brake pads: For better bite and easier heat dissipation

  • Electric power steering with 100A BLDC motor: Provides smooth and linear steering feel

  • Stabiliser bar on rear axle: Improves ride quality and minimises body roll

Moreover, the carmaker also claims to have used 57% Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and is confident of the SUV receiving a 5-star NCAP safety rating.

What’s Next For The Duster

If you’re sold on the Duster, you’ll sadly have to wait a little bit longer as Renault has confirmed an official launch date for March 17, 2026. Bookings were already opened back in January, and deliveries for the first batch of cars are slated to begin sometime next month.

While we await more details, Renault is also planning a new 7-seater SUV based on the same platform, which could make its debut towards the end of this year. We expect this to be based on the Dacia Bigster sold globally.

Also, Renault’s sister brand Nissan is launching its own version of the Duster soon, called the Tekton, which will be based on the same architecture. In fact, it will also be manufactured on the same assembly line at Renault’s Tamil Nadu plant.

ZigSays…

The Duster is back, and Renault is clearly leaving no stone unturned in ensuring it has all the charisma and personality to reclaim the popularity it once had. But the competition is not the same anymore. It now faces a lot of heat from established players, and it has to match up to the high expectations as well. This new platform with all the changes will certainly help it reach that spot, but whether it actually can or not will only be known when prices are out.
