Triumph Bonneville T40: Could More Bikes Join The Range?

The recently launched Triumph Bonneville T40 brings a new platform to the Triumph 400 range. While the Bonneville is the first motorcycle to use this new chassis, we believe there could be more to this platform than meets the eye. Could Triumph be planning smaller, more affordable versions of its popular Bonneville Bobber and Speedmaster? Here’s what we think:

A New Platform With Plenty Of Potential

The Bonneville T40 uses the same 349cc engine as the other Triumph 400 range of bikes. However, it shares its engine tune with the Speed T4 and makes 28.1 PS and 31.2 Nm. The Triumph bike gets a completely new chassis, a conventional telescopic fork, twin shock absorbers and spoked wheels.

With its classic styling and relatively compact proportions, the T40 offers a different take on Triumph’s existing 400 platform. More importantly, its underpinnings could potentially be adapted for other body styles without requiring an entirely new mechanical package.

Could We See A Bonneville T40 Bobber?

Just like how the bigger Bonneville T120 shares its platform with the Bobber and the Speedmaster, Triumph could do the same with the new T40. A smaller Bonneville Bobber would make plenty of sense for Triumph. The larger Bobber's distinctive styling, a floating seat and chunky tyres could translate well to the new platform, giving buyers more options from the premium brand.

A smaller Speedmaster is another possibility. With its relaxed riding position, forward-set footpegs and a classic cruiser styling, it could offer a different experience while retaining the T40's underpinnings.

Of course, these are speculative possibilities, and Triumph has not confirmed any such motorcycles yet.

Closing Thoughts

For now, the Bonneville T40 remains the only confirmed motorcycle on this new platform. But given how Triumph has done with the Speed 400 platform, it certainly leaves the door open for more affordable members of the Bonneville family to arrive in the future.

And if Triumph does decide to build a smaller Bobber or Speedmaster, we reckon there will be plenty of interest!
