After filing a design patent for the U-Go electric scooter in India, Honda is in the news again, this time for a sleek, futuristic-looking electric scooter. The scooter we’re talking about today is the U-be Cross, which has recently been launched in China.
The U-be Cross is essentially based on the Honda U-be, an electric moped designed for the Chinese market.
What’s instantly noticeable is the scooter’s compact size and minimalist design. You get a handlebar that is detachable and adjustable. As you grab it and hop onto this cute little EV, you have a colour-LCD instrument cluster staring back at you. The cluster has a tidy layout, displaying the speed, an odometer, motor temperature and battery percentage. Under it is a neatly housed, diamond-shaped LED headlight with integrated turn indicators.

At the heart of the U-be Cross is a 48V 24Ah (1.2kWh) battery pack with a claimed range of 80km. The U-be on the other hand gets three variants with ranges of 55km, 70km and 80km. The continuous power delivered by the U-be Cross’ motor is 350 watts, and it has a top speed of 25kmph.
As for underpinnings, it’s interesting to see the scooter get fork gaiters in order to protect the fork from dust and debris. Apart from that, it comes shod with all-terrain tyres, making it a ‘go-anywhere’ type of scooter, given that you keep its limited range in mind and do not wander too far. Another interesting bit is that the scooter gets a disc brake at the front with a drum at the rear.
While the official wheel sizes haven’t been mentioned, we suspect the scooter gets 10-inch wheels at both ends, like its sibling, the U-be.
At 5,090 Yuan (approximately Rs 59,381), the scooter, which is available in two colours, sounds like a good deal. It has the potential of being a fun scooter, one that you can commute on for fun. While the scooter is unlikely to make its way to India, you can check out the Hero Electric Eddy and BGauss A2, if you’re looking for a stylish low-speed EV.
