The working of Yamaha’s hybrid technology

Yamaha recently launched India’s first 150cc hybrid motorcycle, called the FZ-S Fi Hybrid. The motorcycle uses Yamaha’s mild-hybrid technology along with an engine stop-start tech which helps in improving performance and overall fuel efficiency. Lets have a closer look at how this hybrid technology actually works.

Working of Yamaha’s mild-hybrid tech

The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid uses a 149cc single cylinder engine which makes 12.4PS and 13.2Nm while being OBD-2B compliant for 2025. The hybrid technology consists of a battery-powered starter motor generator which works alongside the internal combustion engine (ICE) to provide a marginal boost in torque whenever required. 

This makes the motorcycle feel a lot more energetic than usual and it reduces the load on the engine improving the overall fuel efficiency. The advantages of the motor generator  will be seen while trying those difficult overtakes. The extra boost in acceleration will definitely make the overall riding experience of this hybrid motorcycle a lot more effortless. It also allows for a silent startup procedure where the usual cranking noise is not produced and the motorcycle starts silently. 

The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid also gets a Start and Stop System (SSS) which is basically an engine stop-start tech. It automatically shuts off the engine while idling and starts up silently when the clutch is pulled in. This system helps in saving up fuel, improving the overall fuel efficiency of the motorcycle.

The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is priced at Rs 1,44,800 (ex-showroom Delhi), which makes it a lot more expensive than the non-hybrid models of the FZ. However, the mild-hybrid technology makes the overall performance of this motorcycle better than the non-hybrid version. It will also help in getting better fuel efficiency figures too. When all the advantages of Yamaha’s 150cc hybrid motorcycles are added up, then the higher price tag starts making sense, especially for someone who wants a frugal 150cc bike.
