  • New Mahindra Scorpio likely to launch in June 2022.
  • It will get 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine, paired with manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Diesel engine likely to be offered in two tunes, less powerful version for lower variants.
  • Notable features include dual-zone climate control, a sunroof, and probably six airbags.
  • Expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh onwards.

Information about the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio is coming in thick and fast as the SUV giant has started pre-launch activities. The third-generation SUV is being prepped for a possible June launch, on what will be its 20th anniversary. And it’s likely that the 2.2-litre diesel engine will be offered in two states of tune, akin to the Mahindra XUV700

The Scorpio will get the 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines from its stablemates. And the latter will likely be offered in two tunes: 130PS (from Thar) and 155PS. Like the XUV700, Mahindra could limit the base motor with a manual gearbox and lower-spec trims. The more powerful option should be offered in higher-spec trims and get the entire buffet including all-wheel drive.

This move should allow Mahindra to price the base diesel variants more competitively. It must be mentioned that the existing Scorpio gets two separate diesel engines. One was the 2.6-litre M2DI motor limited to the base variant, while top trims got the familiar 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. There was a petrol variant too, which will no doubt be introduced in the new model.

Another area where the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio sees plenty of interest is in the features department. New additions for the nameplate include dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, connected car tech, a single-pane sunroof, roof-mounted speakers (probably branded), off-road modes, and probably six airbags.

The new Mahindra Scorpio is expected to start from around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), pitting it against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, MG Astor, and Skoda Kushaq.
