The Tata Curvv, slated to go into production by 2024, is based on the new Generation 2 architecture. And the good news is that this platform will support a wide menu of powertrain options: petrol, diesel, CNG (a CNG button was placed in the climate control panel), and most importantly, multiple electric powertrains.
Speaking to ZigWheels, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said, “We are actively thinking of all-wheel drive for upcoming electric SUVs in the pipeline. We will keep it protected and be ready with a concept. And if our market survey shows that there will be a meaningful volume, we’ll bring it.”
The highlight here is that the Generation 2 will support multiple electric powertrains. So Tata can offer it either in single or dual motor options as well multiple battery pack choices. The ideology is similar to say… like a Kia EV6, where the rear-wheel drive variant gets a smaller 58kWh battery pack, while the more powerful all-wheel drive trim gets a 77.4kWh battery pack.
Chandra was quick to add that all-wheel drive EVs are definitely in the pipeline for upcoming EVs, unlike the ICE-powered SUVs, which get only front-wheel drive. That said, the carmaker will only introduce them after there is sufficient customer interest or if Tata gets satisfactory responses via surveys. Will the Curve get an all-wheel drivetrain? Well, that’s something we can answer as we inch towards its launch.

On the other hand, the ICE version will fight it out with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and the MG Astor.
