The Nexon EV will break cover on December 19

  • The Nexon EV is expected to have a maximum driving range of 300km.
  • Will be Tata’s first attempt at a long-range EV.
  • It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 17 lakh.
  • Launch likely to happen at the upcoming Auto Expo.

Tata’s much-anticipated long-range electric vehicle, the Nexon EV, is all set to shed its camouflage on December 19. Just ahead of the unveil, the Nexon EV was spied testing on our roads. And this might as well be the last spy shot that you’ll see of the first all-electric subcompact SUV in India.

A fairly camouflaged version of the Nexon EV was spotted testing along with an Altroz EV. The spy shots don’t reveal much, but we do know that the Nexon EV will borrow styling cues from the upcoming Nexon facelift. The overall styling is expected to be similar apart from some bits to distinguish it from the standard Nexon. Papparazis are yet to click some pictures of the cabin but we guess it won't be long until we get to see it.

Tata had earlier planned to unveil the SUV on December 17, but it was later postponed to the current date. The Nexon EV will be the third all-electric SUV to be launched in the country after the Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS EV.  Tata has already set up 85 public chargers in 13 cities. The carmaker also plans to put up 300 chargers in five metro cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad

Technical details about the Nexon EV are still under the covers but we do know that it can do a maximum range of around 300km. The Ziptron powertrain features an AC electric motor that draws power from a battery pack which is IP67 rated (water and dust proof).

We expect Tata to launch the Nexon EV at the Auto Expo 2020 with prices ranging between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, the Nexon will enjoy a niche status as its closest competition is the Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV, both of which belongs to a bigger price bracket. Are we looking at the inception of affordable long-range EVs in India with the Nexon EV? We’ll soon find that out.
