The Indian government has been concentrating on skill development among the unemployed youth in the country since quite a while now. In accordance with the same, it had set up NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation). NSDC has been working towards developing important skills in the youth by providing them technical and vocational education in collaboration with various public and private sector companies.

Tata Motors, India’s largest automotive manufacturer, has also been working with NSDC since 2014 under the Skill India mission. And now, it is finally reaping rewards of the same. Tata Motors’ Aditya Pratap Rathore has won a Medallion Of Excellence by securing highest points at the 44th WorldSkills competition held in Abu Dhabi held from October 15 to 18, 2017. The WorldSkills competition is a global platform for candidates to demonstrate their technical capabilities to execute specific tasks, which they study or perform in their workplace. The 44th WorldSkills competition was hosted by EmiratesSkill and Adu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) and was organised by Abu Dhabi Center for Technical & Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET).

The Indian manufacturer has mentioned that it has developed various standardised courses for mechanic and driver training. The same has been done in collaboration with NGOs having prior experience of running skill development programs. Tata plans to train about 30,000 to 40,000 people in the next three years in skills associated with the automobile industry. Various training programs are already underway in collaboration with Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) at Tata’s manufacturing plants, dealerships and service centres.

India has been a part of this competition since 2003 and is represented by NSDC and its member organisations. This year, a total 1300 candidates from 59 WorldSkills member countries participated in 51 skill competitions, with India participating in 26.
