By taking victory in Rally de Espana 11.3 seconds ahead of team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala, Sebastien Ogier secured his second consecutive World Rally Championship title. The Frenchman took the title with one round to spare and became the eighth driver to lift the championship title more than once.
Ogier started off the mixed rally well and managed to build up a hefty lead on the very first day. Latvala on the other hand wasn’t as fast on the gravel leg. He attacked hard on the remaining two days on the asphalt section but couldn’t quite come close to the Frenchman.
In fact, the only time that the Finn actually served a threat to Ogier was when the reigning champion drove his Polo R WRC for nearly 20km with a damaged tyre. At the end of the Rally Sebastien Ogier said “It’s a great achievement to win one title but even better to take a second. It’s a confirmation and proves the first title was not a one-off.”
At Rally de Espana Ogier secured the 23rd victory of his career and Volkswagen’s 11th of the season, equalling the record set by Citroen in 2005 and 2008. The last round of the 2014 World Rally Championship will be held in Great Britain and will start on 13th November.
