The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a new plan for renewal of private and commercial vehicles’ registration

  • Fees for re-registering private vehicles older than 15 years could cost upto Rs 15,000.
  • Fees for the annual fitness test of commercial vehicles likely to cost 125 times more.
  • Proposal is in the pipeline for 2020 and being assessed by different departments.

Re-registering cars older than 15 years might soon become an expensive affair. As per a new proposal by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the fees for renewing registration of private vehicles older than 15 years might be subject to a 25-fold increase. And in case of commercial vehicles, the fees for the annual fitness test might witness a massive jump by upto 125 times.

The proposal is currently in its nascent state and being circulated amongst various departments for assessment. The new plan is part of government’s scrappage policy which is likely to be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval soon. If green lighted, expect the policy to be implemented by 2020.

Currently, the fees for renewing the registration of a car that is more than 15 years old is around Rs 600. If the new proposal comes into effect, the same renewal  will end up costing more than Rs 15,000. And for a two-wheeler, the re-registration fee could go up to Rs 2,000 in contrast to the current fee of Rs 300. The renewed registration will be valid for a period of five years, similar to the current setting.

In case of commercial vehicles, the registration/re-registration fees will be unaffected but the fee for yearly fitness tests could go up by 125 times. This means that the owner of a 15-year old truck/bus will end up paying Rs 25,000 every year for a fitness test as opposed to just Rs 200 now. The new fee will be applicable for all commercial vehicles, including taxi cabs and pick-up trucks, etc.
