Michelin has been actively involved in development of fuel efficient tyres since 1992 and until now the company has developed four generations of fuel-efficient tyres for cars and three for trucks. However, the company introduced its first range of energy saving products a year and a half ago. Michelin's most advanced tyre in terms of energy saving is the Michelin Energy Saver which has already recorded more than 23 million unit sales since its introduction in Europe in early 2008. These tyres have reduced overall fuel consumption by 65.6 million litres, the equivalent of 1.3 million full tanks of fuel. As a result, they have helped to reduce CO2 emissions by 131,000 tonnes, equal to the amount that would have been produced by 73,000 cars in one year.
The Michelin Energy Saver has shown great results in terms of reduced energy consumption and for the same reasons it has been widely accepted by several car makers from around the world. Within two years of its debut the tyre has been homologated for more than 100 vehicles while more and more manufacturers are taking keen interest in this new technology as the concern regarding energy resources and energy consumption gets increasingly important with each passing day. Generally, tyres worldwide are only certified for use on 20 to 40 vehicles in a span of two years. Thus, this is quite a feat for Michelin to have successfully developed a tyre that helps in significantly reducing fuel consumption without compromising on tread life and safety. In the commercial vehicles department, the X EnergyTM SaverGreen (315/70 R 22.5) tyre was introduced by Michelin's truck division in May 2008. Going by Michelin's study, the new tyre recorded noteworthy reduction in fuel consumption with overall consumption figure going down by 1.1 million litres and reducing the CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes. The tyre has also shown exceptional performance in terms of lifespan and safety. The study states that a single X EnergyTM SaverGreen tyre can reduce fuel consumption by 500 litres per truck, every year. Moreover, the overall reduction by Michelin's energy saving products is more than 66.7 million litres of fuel and CO2 emissions by more than 134,000 tonnes.
