Close on the heels of the 110cc Honda Dream Neo’s launch, rival bike maker Hero has rolled out a limited edition variant of its bread and butter motorcycle, Splendor. Christened Splendor Pro Gold Special Edition, the bike, Hero says, has been launched to celebrate Splendor’s completion of 20 years in the Indian market.
To distinguish the new bike from the Splendor Pro, Hero has draped it in a new shade of gold along with ‘Special Edition’ decals. Mechanically, it’s still powered by the same 97.2cc engine as on the stock Splendor producing 7.7PS of power and 8.04nm of torque. The Special Edition with features like alloy wheels and self start as standard now sits on top of the Splendor line-up. Hero claims the bike will have a segment leading efficiency figure of 79kmpl as opposed to the Dream Neo’s claimed efficiency figure of 74kmpl.
Hero has priced the Splendor Pro Gold Special Edition at Rs 48,500 (ex-showroom Delhi) which is Rs 1,000 more than the Splendor Pro. More importantly, it’s Rs 1,250 more expensive than the similarly specced Honda Dream Neo. The Splendor, which made its debut in 1993, is the longest selling bike in the history of our two-wheeler market and has been the catalyst which made Hero the numero uno two-wheeler manufacturer in the country. Hero have responded swiftly to Honda’s move against its best selling bike but whether they will succeed in fending off the Dream Neo, only time will tell.
