Just like Bollywood actors, cricketers and their fondness for cars is well known. We take a peek inside the garages of the Men in Blue to find out if the cars they drive are as sensational as the cricketers themselves.
Sachin Tendulkar
We all are aware about the fiasco that happened after Sachin requested a custom duty waiver over the Ferrari 360 Modena that was gifted to him by Fiat after the batting maestro equalled the late Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test centuries; all that is in the past as he's sold off the Ferrari and bought the Nissan GT-R. Besides this, the Master Blaster owns a silver-coloured Mercedes-Benz, Volvo S80 and a black Opel Astra, which he won at a Sharjah tournament among many others.
MS Dhoni
Coming next is Captain Dhoni, whom everyone fondly calls Mahi. The captain's passion for automobiles is also pretty well-known – be it cars or sports bikes. Recently, the star cricketer bought a Hummer at a whopping Rs 1 crore, in which he drove from Delhi via Lucknow to his hometown Ranchi. Apart from the Hummer, Mahi owns a Toyota Corolla, a customised open-top Scorpio, Mitsubishi Pajero, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha 650cc sports bike, Kawasaki Ninja and other two-wheelers.
Yuvraj Singh
This young boy from Chandigarh slowly cemented his place in the cricket world and in our hearts too. Yuvraj’s first car was a Honda City gifted by his dad but post the memorable game against England in the ICC World T-20 match in September 2007 where he hit six consecutive sixes and also scored the fastest fifty ever by any batsman, Yuvi became the king of all hearts. It was here that Yuvraj was awarded a Porsche 911 for his 6 sixes achievement by the vice president of BCCI. The Porsche aside, the young, enigmatic cricketer is a proud owner of a Mercedes-Benz, BMW M5 and M3 priced at Rs 1 crore (M5) and Rs 80 lakh (M3) respectively.
The list of luxury cars Yuvraj owns doesn't stop here! The stupendous all-round performance in the recently concluded Cricket World Cup 2011 has got him an Audi A8L from the Indian unit of German-based leading luxury car maker.
2011 BMW M5: In Pictures!
Harbhajan Singh
After the Indian skipper got his shining silver Hummer, controversy kid Harbajan Singh followed suit. The off spinner is so much in love with his new car that he has posted photographs of his new acquisition in his blog. Bhajji’s eagerness to take his Humvee for a spin, even before getting it registered, got him into trouble when the Chandigarh police fined him for the offence. The Hummer aside, Harbhajan also owns a Ford Endeavour and hordes of bikes and cars that he was awarded for his cricketing skills.
Gautam Gambhir
The good looking batsman from Delhi is also obsessed with cars. The Indian opener made headline when he test drove the 1,600cc Formula Ford car. This Delhi Daredevil player owns a Toyota Corolla, Maruti SX4 and a Hyundai Santro. However, Gambhir prefers to be driven rather than drive himself. His dream car is to own a BMW model. But considering the fat pay cheques our cricketers take home, one wonders if they really need to dream about owning a car?
Saurav Ganguly
The Bengal tiger may have retired from cricket but his passion for cars is eternal. The former India captain recently added yet another Mercedes convertible, priced at Rs 46.55 lakh, to his already huge collection of 20 Mercedes-Benz cars, four BMWs and several more cars. Phew!
