Bosch’s new emergency braking system consists of two of their components, a Long-range Radar Sensor (LLR3) and an Electric Stability Programme (ESP). The LLR3 sensor detects objects on the path of the vehicle. People who are aware of cruise control and a plethora of other technologies used by leading car manufacturers such as Volvo will say that a similar setup is used in many road cars as of now.
The new system starts where the other systems left off, at slow speeds. Bosche’s new emergency braking system can automatically trigger the emergency braking procedure at speeds below 30 km/h. At such speeds the gap between two vehicles is usually very small which means reaction time of the average driver and braking distance is limited. The new system prepares the car for braking when the vehicle falls between the minimum set distance. The brake pads are set in position before the vehicle needs to brake which reduces pressure build up by a few crucial milliseconds.
The system also works at high speeds, the first warning is a visual or acoustic warning that tells the driver to slow down, and then the brakes of the vehicle are briefly jerked if the driver still does not react. If the driver continues to ignore the signs the brakes of the vehicle are partially operated, thereby increasing the reaction time of the driver from the impending accident. If the driver’s reaction is still insufficient to stop the car, the system increases deceleration to bring the car to a safe halt before the event of a crash. The last procedure is called target braking. The new emergency braking system from Bosch is very clever as it works in all driving conditions and at all speeds.
