BMW has pulled the wraps off its i Home Charging Services at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The system, according to the luxury carmaker, is a smart solution for charging electric and plug-in hybrid BMW models using solar energy.
BMW claims that this new system will bring reduction in the cost of charging 'i' vehicles. This system, according to the company, integrates solar panels with the domestic electricity supply to charge a BMW i3 or BMW i8 when the sun is shining.
Commenting on this new system, Julian Lienich, Project Manager, i Home Charging Services, BMW, said, “Our aim is to make mobility as cheap as possible for users and to allow them to maximise their use of green power – but without having to organise everything themselves.”
Besides introducing the new charging system, BMW will also showcase a concept product termed as the stationary energy storage system which uses repurposed BMW i batteries. This system collects solar energy so it can later be used to charge an electric vehicle or power a house.
The BMW i Home Charging Services will be available to customers in the international market in 2016.
