The 20-year-old Spaniard claimed victory with a lead of 0.053 seconds, registering a historic win at Portugal

Ana Carrasco

The 2017 Supersport 300 World Championship in Portugal witnessed history being made when a woman rider left world championship candidates Marc Garcia and Alfonso Coppola behind. This unprecedented event took place when Ana Carrasco, on her Kawasaki Ninja 300, used the classic slipstream technique to cut past Alfonso, who was leading until the very end.
It was a dramatic climax where both Garcia and Carrasco tried to use the draft against Coppola, and Carrasco claimed the lead at the very last second to win. One can even gauge how close the racing action was as Ana won by a slender margin of just 0.053 seconds while Coppola finished just 0.009 seconds ahead of Garcia. The race has lifted Carrasco to the seventh position, with only two races to go until the end of the season. It has also pulled down Garcia to the second position while Coppola is now at the top.

She won the race with a very close margin

Ana Carrasco joined the European Moto2 series in 2016 but has been racing at the international stage since the age of 16. It was at the age of 16 too that she became the first woman to score points in a world championship race since Katja Poensgen in 2001.
The World Supersport 300 is a novice category series formed this season to provide opportunities to promising riders.
While some might say that it is no major victory, we would also like to remind that it’s just a start. Not just on the global front, even India has been witnessing similar achievements from our women in motor racing too.

Ana in celebratory mood

The likes of Aishwarya Pissay and Alisha Abdullah haven’t just performed beautifully on the motor racing ground but are also training and inspiring other women to do the same. Several women biker groups have come up in the recent past, taking up big bikes from Harley-Davidson, Indian, Triumph and the like. Events and championships such as TVS’ One Make and Honda’s Dream Riding initiatives have also provided them a platform to prove themselves. While it will take a good amount of time for women riders to share the platform with men equally, this is still a very motivating start.
