Costs Rs 1,67,600 (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Yamaha has officially entered India’s electric two-wheeler space with the launch of the EC-06, priced at Rs 1,67,600 (ex-showroom, Delhi). That makes it Rs 21,601 more expensive than the River Indie (priced at Rs 1,45,999 ex-showroom), the scooter on which it is based. But this isn’t just a badge-engineered exercise. Instead, Yamaha has taken a proven electric platform and reworked it quite a bit. While the River Indie remains the practical, utility-first avatar of this platform, the EC-06 positions itself as the more premium and design-led alternative.

Design: Familiar Foundation
At first glance, it’s clear that the Yamaha EC-06 shares its underpinnings with the River Indie. Though the broad apron, large side panels and overall proportions are similar, Yamaha has gone to great lengths to ensure the EC-06 doesn’t feel like a rebadged product.
The highlight is the vertically stacked dual-pod LED headlight, which gives the scooter a distinctly futuristic face. The rear section is slimmer and more compact, lending the EC-06 a sportier stance. Overall, it feels cleaner, sharper and more urban in character.
In comparison, the River Indie sticks to a rugged, utility-oriented design language, with boxy lines, a wide tail section, and horizontally placed dual-pod headlights that prioritise function over flair.

Battery, Range & Performance: Decent Numbers On Paper
The Yamaha EC-06 is powered by a 4kWh lithium-ion battery paired with an IPMS (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous) motor producing 6.7kW of peak power and 26Nm. This allows the scooter to hit a claimed top speed of 79kmph (we’d have liked it to be a bit faster, but oh well).
Yamaha claims an IDC range of 169km, and the scooter takes 8 hours for a 0-80 percent charge using a standard charger. It also gets three riding modes: Eco, Standard and Power, which alter performance and efficiency.
On the other hand, River Indie uses the same battery capacity and motor layout but is tuned with practicality in mind. It claims a slightly lower IDC range (163km), but has a higher claimed top-speed of 90kmph and offers similar charging to 80 percent.

Ride & Hardware: Built To Handle Indian Roads
The EC-06 rides on 14-inch alloy wheels with 110/80 front and 120/70 rear tyres, supported by a telescopic fork and a monoshock. Braking duties are handled by 200mm disc brakes at both ends, with CBS as standard. At 132kg kerb weight, the EC-06 should feel a bit heavy.
It also brings strong durability credentials, with IP67-rated motor and battery and IP65-rated electronics, reassuring buyers about long-term reliability in Indian conditions.

Features & Connectivity: Clean And Tech-Focused
The Yamaha EC-06 gets a colour LCD instrument console with a clean interface, along with keyless ignition and ‘Yamaha Motor Connect R’ smartphone connectivity. Through the app, riders can access ride data, vehicle status and key alerts. But not having at least a turn-by-turn navigation is a big miss, especially for an e-scooter that costs over a lakh and a half rupees.
The River Indie does go further with utility-focused features like hill-hold assist and accessory mounting points, but Yamaha seems to have deliberately kept the EC-06’s feature list cleaner and more rider-focused.

Storage & Practicality: Sporty Choices Come With Trade-Offs
With a 24.5-litre underseat storage compartment, the EC-06 offers enough space for daily essentials, but it clearly isn’t designed to be a cargo hauler. Yamaha has sacrificed outright storage capacity to maintain a sleeker silhouette.
The River Indie, in comparison, remains the undisputed king of practicality with its massive 43-litre underseat storage and a 12-litre front glovebox, reinforcing its utility-first positioning.

ZigSays
The Yamaha EC-06 marks an important entry into India’s electric scooter space for the Japanese brand. However, there’s no escaping the fact that both the Yamaha EC-06 and the River Indie are priced on the higher side for what they offer, especially when viewed purely through a value-for-money lens in an increasingly competitive electric scooter market.
That said, Yamaha isn’t necessarily stepping on River’s toes. River is manufacturing the EC-06 for Yamaha at its facility in Karnataka, and more importantly, the two scooters are aimed at very different audiences. That said, according to Yamaha, the scooter is available in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu initially, and more states will likely follow soon.
Yamaha seems to know that the pricing is on the premium side, so it seems to just be testing waters with limiting the availability first. Expect the brand to scale its availability up in the following months, phase-wise. This should also give Yamaha enough time to train its service personnel, since this is a brand new journey for Yamaha in India.
So while they share the same foundation, the EC-06 and Indie can coexist rather than compete directly, each serving a distinct purpose in India’s electric two-wheeler landscape. All said and done, the EC-06 should’ve ideally cost only about Rs 10,000 more than the Indie, considering the differences and the compromise on practicality.
