Budget Vs Premium EVs: Where Does Spending A Little More Make The Biggest Difference?

For many Indian buyers, an EV is simply about looking past petrol bills for a daily city commute, and in 2026, we have plenty of budget options to meet your needs. Cars like the MG Comet EV, Tata Tiago EV, Punch EV and Nexon EV exist precisely for that. But if you're on the fence between restricting your budget and stretching your spend into premium territory, then here’s a detailed article explaining the significance of spending a bit more. 

In the premium space, Mahindra's BE 6, XEV 9e, and XEV 9S are truly remarkable offerings, giving buyers much more than the more budget-oriented options. Here’s a closer look: 

The Budget EV Options

Tata's electric lineup covers the entry point under the Rs 15 lakh budget. The Tiago EV, with its Battery-as-a-Service option, can be had for Rs 4.69 lakh, or Rs 6.99 lakh without the subscription model, going up to around Rs 9.99 lakh for the fully loaded variant. The claimed range goes up to 285 km. The Punch EV sits a notch above, priced from Rs 6.49 lakh (BaaS) or Rs 9.69 lakh outright, up to Rs 12.59 lakh, with a claimed range crossing 450 km on the larger pack. The Nexon EV, Tata's best-seller in the segment, sits somewhere in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 18 lakh budget.

MG is another manufacturer offering affordable EVs like the MG Comet EV and select variants of the Windsor EV. 

Where The Extra Spend Starts Paying Off

The moment you step up towards Mahindra's BE 6 (Rs 18.90-26.90 lakh), XEV 9e (Rs 21.90-30.50 lakh) or the seven-seater XEV 9S (Rs 20.65-30.70 lakh), the improvements aren't marginal, but noteworthy. Let’s understand this by looking at the different aspects: 

Range and real-world usability: The Nexon EV's real-world numbers typically land in the 300- 375 km band. Mahindra's 79 kWh packs push claimed range to 682 km (BE 6) and 656 km (XEV 9e), which realistically translates to 450-500 km+ in daily use. 

The extra 150-200 km is enough to make long highway drives genuinely stress-free rather than something you plan around charging stops. For anyone doing frequent intercity travel, this is the single biggest reason to spend more. Even within the city, you would end up charging fewer times. 

Performance that's a different league: The Tiago EV and Punch EV are built for efficient, unhurried city driving, not outright pace. Even the Nexon EV, while quick off the line, isn't chasing performance numbers. The BE 6 and XEV 9e, by contrast, hit 0-100 km/ph in around 6.7 seconds! Moreover, both Mahindra EVs also make almost double the power output, which means overtaking and maintaining higher speeds would be much easier.

Safety matters: The Nexon EV's Level 2 ADAS is a solid addition to its segment, built around a single camera-based system. Mahindra raises the bar considerably with a 5-radar, vision-based Level 2+ ADAS setup capable of distinguishing pedestrians, animals and multiple vehicle types, plus a driver monitoring system that tracks fatigue. In addition to the better ADAS system, the Mahindra EVs also offer an extra airbag, and their larger size and higher weight further add to the safety credentials. 

Many more features: The Mahindra EVs offer a lot more in terms of equipment. The triple-screen layouts spanning over 43 inches on the XEV 9e and 9S, augmented-reality HUDs and 16-speaker Harman Kardon systems are some of the top features. You also get features like memory seats, multi-colour ambient lighting, multiple wireless phone chargers and auto-park assist. All these features are unheard of in the lower price category. In fact, most of these features belong to much more expensive cars.

Extra space and practicality: For families prioritising space, the Mahindra XEV 9e and 9S are both EVs that come with zero compromises in this department. Both offer a comfortable second row, while the XEV 9S also adds a third row that is indeed very usable. The sense of comfort and space further justifies the price premium that these EVs ask for.
