Sanjay Takale Retires From The 2026 Dakar Rally After Making India Proud!

Often regarded as the toughest motorsport event in the world, the Dakar Rally never fails to remind competitors why it demands absolute respect. Unforgiving terrain, long days in the cockpit and relentless mechanical stress ensure that nothing is ever guaranteed. At the 2026 edition, Indian rally veteran Sanjay Takale returned for his second Dakar with confidence and momentum, starting the rally on a strong note by leading the H3 class through the early stages. However, in true Dakar fashion, an unexpected engine failure brought his promising campaign to a premature end.

Despite the early exit, Takale’s performance across the opening stages was both impressive and historic. His performance at this year’s Dakar once again underlined the growing presence of Indian drivers on the world’s toughest rally stage. The Car And The Class

Sanjay Takale was competing in car number 722, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ100. He is part of the H3 class in the Dakar Classic category, which focuses on older rally cars and follows the original spirit of the Dakar. Unlike the main rally, this category places heavy emphasis on maintaining target average speeds and accurate timing.

Prologue: A Historic Start

Driving for the Compagnie Saharienne team, Sanjay Takale, along with his navigator Maxime Raud, announced his presence in the Prologue, the opening competitive run, by topping the H3 class. The duo delivered a standout performance right from day one, setting the tone for a strong Dakar campaign.

Stage 1 and Stage 2: Momentum Builds

The duo carried their Prologue success into Stage 1, covering 305km around Yanbu. With a mix of fast tracks, loose sand and tricky navigation sections, this section tested drivers on consistency and precision rather than just outright speed. Stage 2 saw Takale and Raud continue their strong run, maintaining the lead in the H3 class while negotiating tough terrain and strict timing controls.

Stage 3: Trouble Emerges

By Stage 3, Takale and Raud were firmly in control of the H3 class. However, during the stage, their Land Cruiser began showing signs of serious engine trouble with a piston failure. Despite completing the stage and returning to the bivouac at Alula, the damage to the engine was significant and raised concerns about continuing further. 

Marathon Stage and Withdrawal

The marathon stage is one of the most demanding parts of the Dakar Rally, as no external mechanical assistance is allowed. Given the extent of the engine damage, Takale and Raud were forced to withdraw from the rally after Stage 3, bringing their promising Dakar 2026 campaign to an early and disappointing end.

A Result That Goes Beyond The Finish Line: A Proud Moment For Indian Rallying

Despite the withdrawal, Takale’s early-stage performances highlighted his experience and consistency at the world’s toughest rally. Multiple class-leading runs in the H3 category reinforced the fact that Indian drivers can compete and succeed at Dakar, even when the event delivers its harshest challenges. Had it not been for the engine failure, Takale would have certainly delivered in the stages to come. In 2025, he became the first Indian to successfully finish the Dakar Rally in the four-wheeler category, ending the event 18th overall and 10th in class in the Dakar Classic category. And even though he didn’t get the result he trained and hoped for this year, he has certainly made the country proud.
