Renault is making waves in India, and how! With the inauguration of its trendy new design centre in Chennai, the French automaker has launched a daring new chapter under its ‘renault. rethink' initiative.
Five all-new, made-in-India products are in the works, the first of which will arrive in three months. But among the talk of design and forward-looking sculptures, one familiar outline has everyone abuzz. Is the mythical Renault Duster about to make a return?
It is Renault's biggest design studio outside Europe, and yes, it's filled to the brim with everything from next-generation 3D modelling technology to high-res VR zones.
But all that tech sorcery aside, the real hype is about what's being whirred up inside.

Renault has confirmed that five brand-new models have been designed and localised right here in India. The first of these five is expected within the next three months. But what are these cars? And does one of them wear the Duster badge?
In the centre of the inauguration stood a dramatic visual focal point, a sleek, angular sculpture christened 'renault. rethink'. A combination of strong creases, angular surfaces, and a pulsating light at the centre, embedded with symbolism. Designed to highlight Renault's new Indian design philosophy, the sculpture was immediately the buzz. Why? Due to the honed (and even untrained) car eye, it seemed to bear a strange similarity to something we have seen, and adored, before.

Its silhouette stands tall and muscular, with a steep bonnet line and sharp wheel arches. The SUV silhouette was unmistakable. Was this abstract shape somehow a teaser of the next-gen Duster?
Renault made it clear that the sculpture does not depict any particular future model. It's not a disguised prototype or a teaser for any single car. Rather, it's a design concept of what Renault's Indian design language might become: a fusion of future-looking shape, local spirit, and artistic abstraction.
And yet, no matter how hard Renault attempted to keep the focus on the design subject, we could only squint while looking at those flared-out wheel arches and say, "That's awfully Duster-y."

Coincidence, maybe. But when your brand is restarting in SUV-starved India and just so happens to have a third-generation Duster in your global lineup, describing it as a coincidence seems a bit vague. Perhaps it's a work of art. Maybe it's a sly nod to what's coming up in store… We can only wait.
All the new models will be shared development with Nissan, which has also been remodelling its India plans. This Renault-Nissan tie-up implies a more common use of platforms, components, and manufacturing, assisting in reducing costs as well as bringing down time-to-market.

With as much as 90% localisation, these vehicles will be produced with Indian customers in mind. Watch out for competitive prices and robust after-sales support, now reinforced by Renault's refurbished dealer experience under the 'R Store' moniker.
Renault's message is clear: they're not only manufacturing cars for India, they're manufacturing them from India, for the world. And although the Duster has not been name-dropped per se, the silhouette spottings, Indian market SUV-love, and the timelines all point to one very dusty renaissance.

The Duster itself might not have returned yet, but it's certainly flying round the block. So strap yourself in, the next three months might be about to get exciting.
