Despite the stringent norms enforced by the government, diesel Mahindras seems to be roping in more sales than petrol

Mahindra is one of the few carmakers in India that still offers the choice of petrol and diesel engine for almost the entirety of its lineup. Despite the stricter norms trying to phase out diesels, it seems like customers are still holding a soft spot for the good old oil burner and the numbers confirm the same. Don’t take our word for it, but take a look for yourself at the January 2024 sales figures of Mahindra cars that offer both petrol and diesel engine options.

  • The preferred choice of fuel is pretty apparent. All the Mahindra cars witnessed more sales for their respective diesel variants.

  • Biggest disparity lies in the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic numbers, partially due to the fact that the Scorpio Classic is a diesel-only SUV.

  • Thar diesel variants sold more than 8 times the petrol variants.

  • XUV300 petrol and diesel sales were quite close, considering that the diesel sales numbers also accounts for XUV400 sales.

  • XUV700 diesel sales were more than 2.5 times the sales of its petrol variants.

It isn’t like there is a major performance difference between the petrol and diesel variants of these SUVs. In fact, in terms of initial cost of purchase, all of the diesel variants are dearer than their corresponding petrol variants. But in the longer run, the diesel variants will offer better fuel efficiency, especially in the city, not to mention the ease of use, thanks to more torque in the lower RPM range.
