The electric SUV space in India is getting more exciting by the day. Two of the most highly awaited models, namely, the Mahindra XEV 7e and the Tata Sierra EV, are both SUVs that are worth waiting for! Both homegrown and futuristic, yet very different in their design approach.
While the XEV 7e represents Mahindra’s bold, futuristic born electric identity, the Sierra EV is more about nostalgia, and bringing back the beloved nameplate from the 1990s in a thoroughly modern avatar.
In this article, we take a deep dive into how these two made-in-India EVs differ in their overall design language, taking a close look at how these two SUVs have been designed to cater to the Indian buyers…
Starting with the Mahindra XEV 7e, the SUV takes a very futuristic, tech-driven design approach. The front end is dominated by a closed-off grille, vertically stacked headlights with fog lamps in a V-shaped housing. Similar to the XEV 9e, the 7e’s grille is also finished in body colour and has parallel lines. Modern-day buyers will appreciate the connected light bar.

The Tata Sierra EV, in contrast, blends the old and the new. Its front fascia features Tata’s new EV design identity, a full-width LED light bar connecting slim DRLs, along with a smooth, body-coloured grille panel and a more upright hood. The lower bumper integrates vertical air inlets for aerodynamic efficiency, and you also get plenty of gloss black elements to add a sense of bling to the look.
From the sides, both SUVs express their unique design philosophies clearly. The XEV 7e takes a more traditional approach, with the roofline resembling that of the XUV700. Like most EVs, it gets aerodynamic alloy wheels. The flush door handles and smooth panel transitions add to its premium feel. Furthermore, you get thick cladding and wheel arches, giving it a more refined look.

The Sierra EV, meanwhile, adopts a more upright SUV stance, with a boxier profile that echoes the original Sierra’s proportions. The large windows, blacked-out pillars, and strong shoulder line create an impression of openness and space. The Sierra EV’s rectangular rear glass section remains its most defining design trait, instantly recognisable and nostalgic, yet thoroughly modernised. You get flush door handles here as well, and some might appreciate the use of gloss black elements.
Overall, the XEV 7e’s design will feel more familiar, while that of the Sierra will be a bit unique in the segment. However, both side designs will appeal to the modern buyer.
The rear of the Mahindra XEV 7e continues the theme of sharpness and futuristic cues. The 7e gets wraparound taillights like the XUV700, instead of the connected lights seen on the XEV 9e. One can expect it to be the design to be a bit more conventional when compared to the XEV 9e. It will get the new illuminated Mahindra logos at the front end as well as rear ends.

The Tata Sierra EV, on the other hand, has a flat tailgate complementing its upright stance. You get a wide, horizontal LED light bar, which gives the rear end a sleek look. Here as well, you get gloss black finishes, and a silver skid plate at the back adds a sense of ruggedness.
The Tata Sierra EV is set to be launched soon after the ICE-powered Sierra, likely by the end of 2026. The XEV 7e is expected to hit the Indian roads by December 2025.. Both these SUVs will slot in the popular electric SUV segment and face competition from the likes of Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV and Tata Curvv EV.
The Mahindra XEV 7e and Tata Sierra EV might both belong to the same electric SUV segment, but their design languages couldn’t be more different. Even though they share a few design cues like connected lighting elements and flush door handles, their overall silhouettes are very different.
With the Sierra, there is a hint of nostalgia as well, and those who have used the OG Sierra or were fans of it will definitely have a liking for this modern avatar of the Sierra. The XEV 7e is not as polarising as the XEV 9e, and finds the middle ground between the extroversion of the XEV 9e and the conventional approach of the XUV700. That being said, both these SUVs will be head-turners for sure!
