The question is: Do you just want a luxury tag or save money and get a similar premium experience?

No Need to spend Telsa money on Born Electric

Yes, there's a certain badge value that comes with parking a Tesla Model Y or a BMW iX1 LWB in your driveway. But once you look past the logos, you realise that Mahindra’s electric Origin SUVs, such as the BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S, offer genuine premium ownership and a better experience at a much lower price. In short, you don’t need Tesla money to enjoy a premium EV. Still a bit confused? Read on as we explain this further:

The Premium EV Price Reality

Enter a Tesla, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo or BMW showroom today, and you're looking at a serious commitment. The Tesla Model Y starts at around Rs 50.90 lakh (ex-showroom), with the larger three-row Model Y L pushing that figure even higher. The BYD Sealion 7, despite being positioned as the "value" flagship EV, still starts at roughly Rs 49.40 lakh, while the BMW iX1 LWB is priced close to Rs 51.40 lakh. On-road prices in cities like Mumbai push all three comfortably past the Rs 54-62 lakh mark once you factor in insurance and registration.

That's a lot of money for what, on paper, is still a mid-size electric SUV. You're paying heavily for the badge and exclusivity rather than on-paper upgrades.

What Mahindra Brings To The Table

This is where Mahindra's BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S completely change the game. The BE 6 starts at Rs 18.90 lakh and tops out at Rs 26.90 lakh for the fully loaded Pack Three. The XEV 9e ranges from Rs 21.90 lakh to Rs 30.50 lakh, while the seven-seat XEV 9S starts at just Rs 20.65 lakh and maxes out around Rs 30.70 lakh. In other words, you could buy the top-spec version of any of these three Mahindra EVs and still have well over Rs 20 lakh left in your pocket compared to a base Tesla Model Y.

And this isn't a case of paying less for noticeably less. All three Mahindra EVs are built on the latest INGLO electric skateboard architecture and put up a tough fight against much bigger names.

Technology And Features That Don't Feel Like A Downgrade

Step inside a BE 6 or XEV 9e and you are welcomed by an interior that truly makes you feel special. The BE 6 takes the cockpit-style approach, while the XEV 9e and 9S look premium and modern with as many as three screens, which span over 43 inches of combined display real estate, complemented by an augmented-reality head-up display. Moreover, the AR Rahman-curated ambient sound themes and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system deliver a theatre-like experience.

Safety tech is equally serious. Top variants across the range come with Level 2+ ADAS built around five radars and a vision system capable of detecting pedestrians, animals and different vehicle types, along with a driver and occupant monitoring system. This is the kind of technology suite that, until recently, was found only in cars costing twice as much.

Mahindra XEV 9S ADAS Features

In addition to this, you also get your expected premium features like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, powered seats with memory function and multi-colour ambient lighting. With so much on offer, there is hardly any compromise in terms of features when you compare it to the bigger names.

Performance That Holds Its Own

The performance numbers are where Mahindra's stance gets genuinely compelling. The 79 kWh coupled with a powerful electric motor leads to a 0-100 kmph time of under 7 seconds for these Mahindra EVs.

Claimed range tops out at 682 km for the BE 6 and 656 km for the XEV 9e, with the XEV 9S's largest battery pack claiming up to 679 km. Fast charging tops up 20-80 percent in under 20 minutes on a 175-180 kW DC charger.

While the power figures and performance numbers might not be better than those of these Rs 50 lakh EVs, they are very competitive. In fact, the Mahindra EVs are much quicker than the BMW iX1 LWB.

Mahindra XEV 9E Side

The story is similar if you compare the real-world range. With a real-world range of up to 500 km, the Mahindra EVs offer peace of mind and make sure you don’t get range anxiety.

The Ownership Value Argument

This is ultimately where the case for Mahindra strengthens further. Tesla's service network in India is still in its early days, BYD is expanding but remains limited in reach, and BMW's premium positioning comes with correspondingly premium service costs. Mahindra, on the other hand, brings one of the largest and most established dealership and service networks in the country to the table, which is something that matters enormously over a five-to-seven-year ownership cycle, especially for an EV where software updates, battery servicing and charging infrastructure support are just as important as the initial purchase.

ZigSays…

The premium EV segment in India has long operated on the assumption that if you want cutting-edge tech, strong performance, and a genuinely upmarket cabin, you need to write a cheque north of Rs 50 lakh. Mahindra's BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV 9S disagree and create their own rules. You're getting better performance figures, a genuinely premium cabin experience, and serious real-world range that matches or beats pricier rivals. All this while saving anywhere between Rs 20-30 lakh. For most Indian buyers who want the premium EV experience without the premium EV price tag, the smarter badge to chase right now might just be Mahindra's twin peaks logo.
