Stellantis recently announced its ‘Brand House 2030’ plans for India, outlining the introduction of 12 new models across Jeep and Citroen brands, in a bid to boost volumes and become a serious player in the Indian market. Among these, the brand said that it will introduce a Jeep-badged premium pickup truck, which will most likely be the Gladiator sold globally.

Based on the iconic Wrangler, the Gladiator will sit alongside it to cash in on the small, but fast-growing segment of pickup trucks with an off-road focused flavour and a lot of interesting bits. In this story, let’s explore more about the Gladiator and if it could be the halo product Jeep needs:

Jeep Gladiator: Design

Essentially the Wrangler’s pickup truck version, the Gladiator shares a lot of its design with the SUV rounding it off for a tough, rugged and off-road focused look that sets it apart from anything else on the roads. Up front, it looks near-identical to the Wrangler with round LED headlamps, a seven-slat grille and a muscular bonnet with a functional hood scoop. Pictured here is the Mojave variant, which also gets an aggressive off-road focused bumper with LED fog lamps to improve its approach angle.

In profile, it gets the classic boxy silhouette, and even some retro-cool elements such as exposed door hinges, black pull-type door handles and squared-off flared fenders that add a lot of character. Depending on the variant, you also get a sticker on the sides of the bonnet, while chunky 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres round-off the purposeful look.

The rear design is minimal, with square LED taillamps and a ‘Jeep’ logo on the tailgate. Keen-eyed viewers will also notice a pass-through window on the rear windshield.

Jeep Gladiator: Interior

Inside, the Gladiator features an upright and functional dashboard layout, which is dominated by a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system on top. All of the essential features have dedicated buttons on the centre console, so be rest assured that you won’t have to navigate through various menus on the move for basic functions.

There’s also a three-spoke steering wheel, a retro-cool twin-pod instrument cluster and leatherette upholstery to add comfort. Just like the Wrangler, you also have removable doors and hard top and a foldable windshield if you truly want to soak in your surroundings.

Jeep Gladiator: Features & Safety

Don’t go by the Gladiator’s functional theme when it comes to features; there’s plenty of gizmos on offer. Some of them include dual-zone climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, power windows, height-adjustable driver seat, 8-speaker Alpine sound system, power-adjustable and heated front seats and steering wheel, inbuilt navigation and auto-dimming IRVM.

It also gets safety features such as Level-2 ADAS, 6 airbags, rear view camera, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control and hill hold assist.

Jeep Gladiator: Powertrain

There’s a lot of off-road goodies on offer too, such as terrain modes, front sway bar disconnect, low-range transfer case, heavy-duty Dana solid axles, rock rails, steel underbody protection, electronic rear locking differential, FOX hydraulic dampers and a lot more.

Jeep Gladiator: Launch Date, Expected Price & Rivals

Jeep has not confirmed a launch date for the Gladiator till now, however, you can expect it to reach Indian shores next year. It is expected to be priced from Rs 75 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Gladiator will have no direct rivals in India, but the Wrangler will be its chief competitor with similar off-road capabilities and a shared interior and feature list.

ZigSays…

Jeep bringing the Gladiator to India will be an exciting proposition for enthusiasts, especially given how limited, in terms of options, Jeep’s lineup is. It will become a great option for buyers looking for the same butch and tough nature of the Wrangler but with a lot more practicality to make it a true tourer for all the cross country drives deep into the wilderness. That said, Jeep has a history of pricing products too high and we wish the Gladiator comes across as well priced, which may even attract buyers from more affordable pickups like the Hilux, willing to pay the premium for the added capability.
