The Mahindra S201 is rumoured to be launched in 2018 and will take on the current leader in the compact-SUV segment in India, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, aside from the Tata Nexon and the Honda WR-V. There could be a second, long-wheelbase version of the S201 which could take on midsize SUVs and crossovers like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and the Renault Captur.
The Mahindra S201 is based on the same platform as the SsangYong Tivoli, only heavily modified by Mahindra to meet the needs of the Indian consumer and Indian car cess brackets. The quality know-how from SsangYong and desi jugaad from Mahindra engineers could make the S201 a practical, feature-loaded quality compact-SUV to have at a very competitive price.
For now, the only details available are that Mahindra will use a new generation of turbocharged diesel and petrol motors to power the S201. Both manual and automatic (AMT, probably to keep costs low) transmissions could be offered to make it more attractive. Rumours suggest the petrol motor will be a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder unit developing 140PS of maximum power, while the diesel engine will be a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder unit developing 100PS of maximum power.
Knowing Mahindra, expect the S201 to be offered with a lot of gadgets and gizmos. Personalisation options, automatic climate control, keyless entry and go, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, in-built maps, reversing camera and sensors, automatic headlamps, automatic windshield wipers, cruise control, a sunroof, dual-airbags/ABS/EBD as standard are just some of the features the S201 will have to be offered with from the get go to stand a chance in this competitive segment. Mahindra could offer some features from the larger XUV500, like static bending lamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, voice guidance etc. to set the S201 apart.
For now, there are no official statements on when the Mahindra S201 will debut in India though it has been spotted testing on our roads recently. More clarity on the S201’s launch is expected closer to the Auto Expo in early February 2018.
