Harley-Davidson has updated its 440cc platform with the new X440 T, a variant that promises better refinement, sharper handling and a more cohesive design. With additions like ride-by-wire, riding modes, revised suspension internals and a completely redesigned tail section, the Harley-Davidson X440 T aims to fix the rough edges of the original X440. We spent time riding it to see just how much of a difference these updates make. Here are the top five takeaways from our first ride:
The most noticeable change on the X440 T is its redesigned tail section. Harley has taken clear inspiration from the XR1200, giving the bike a cleaner, more cohesive stance. The new subframe, sleeker tail panel, and neatly integrated LED tail-light with indicators instantly elevate the bike’s proportions. It looks much more premium and far less cluttered than the standard X440. Interestingly, when riding behind the bike, the indicator placement gives off a quirky “Sid from Ice Age” vibe — but overall, it’s a massive visual upgrade that finally suits the platform.
Beyond the tail, Harley has refined the X440 T with several tasteful styling updates. The exhaust now gets better-finished muffler guards and a classier tip. The rider footpegs, brake and gear levers, and new metal heel plates contribute to a more premium feel. Bar-end mirrors and cleaner grips add a familiar “big Harley” sensibility, helping the bike feel more grown-up. Unlike the standard X440, nothing looks out of place here — the T feels more polished, making it the visually superior choice for anyone wanting a neo-retro Harley vibe in a compact package.

The most substantial functional upgrade is the move to ride-by-wire, enabling two riding modes (Rain and Road), switchable traction control and switchable ABS. In Rain mode, the torque is noticeably restricted, making the bike feel overly subdued — more than you’d prefer. But the moment you switch to Road mode, the engine wakes up, delivering torque more enthusiastically. The biggest improvement? Harley has fixed the small fuelling glitches of the earlier X440. Throttle transitions are smoother, power delivery is linear, and overall refinement is far better. Importantly, traction control settings remain saved even after switching off the ignition.

Harley has tightened the suspension tune significantly. The earlier plush and mushy feel is gone, replaced with a more planted and neutral setup. At slow speeds, the ride is comfortable, but hit sharp bumps quickly and the rear can toss you slightly off the seat. The updated fork internals deliver better progression and front-end balance, resulting in improved cornering confidence and stability. The rear, however, can feel a touch springy, so adjusting preload will help most riders. Overall, this setup works far better for daily commuting and spirited riding than the older, softer tune.

At Rs 2,79,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the X440 T costs around Rs 25,000 more than the top X440 variant, but Harley has reshuffled the lineup since. The Denim variant is gone, and the Vivid and S variants are now more affordable. Interestingly, the X440 T now sits at the same price point the X440 S previously occupied. Considering the added features, improved refinement, better suspension tune and overall polish, the X440 T feels like the most complete version of the platform. If you’re planning to get an X440, this is easily the one to pick, as the upgrades justify the premium and elevate the riding experience meaningfully.
