Slated to reach Indian shores by March 2020

  • The Taycan 4S performance package variant was used for the NCAP tests.
  • It fared well in the adult, child and pedestrian protection category.
  • Safety features like AEB, 8 airbags as well as speed and lane assists helped the Taycan 4S score a 73 per cent in safety assist.
  • It currently retails at USD 103,800 (Rs 74 lakh, excluding taxes), undercutting the Taycan Turbo S by USD 76,000 (Rs 54 lakh).

Porsche may have been a late comer to the electric party with the Taycan, but it seems like the long testing phase was worth the wait. The electric sedan has now joined an exclusive club of being one of the safest vehicles in Europe with a 5-star Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) safety rating. Euro-NCAP tests are some of the most stringent in the world and the Taycan came out with flying colors.

The variant tested was the Taycan 4S with the performance package. This means that the 4S is equipped with a 93.4kWh battery from the Turbo and Turbo S variants, producing 571PS of power. The Euro-NCAP report reveals that the electric sedan scored  85 per cent for adult occupant protection, an 83 per cent for child occupant protection and 70 per cent for pedestrian safety.

It also scored 73 per cent in safety assist ratings thanks to equipment like 8 airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, speed assist, lane assist as well as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) for civilians and cyclists for city and inter-urban setups. It was also helped by active bonnet that is designed to help mitigate the shock to the pedestrian’s head in the event of a collision.

Porsche currently retails the Taycan 4S at a price tag of USD 103,800 (Rs 74 lakh, excluding taxes) which undercuts the Taycan Turbo S by USD 76,000 (Rs 54 lakh).  There is a good chance that we might get the Taycan 4S variant for India with a slated debut of March 2020. This safety rating is also good news for clearing doubts that the more affordable 4S makes a compromise in safety standards, which thankfully hasn’t turned out to be the case.
