Porsche loves its records and titles, and the upcoming range-topping Taycan model brags a rather significant one

  • Pre-series Taycan becomes the fastest electric Porsche to lap the Nürburgring.

  • Porsche development driver Lars Kern was piloting the car to its limits.

  • The time of 7:07.55 minutes puts the upcoming Taycan in proper electric hypercar territory.

  • It was a massive 26 seconds quicker than the previous Taycan Turbo S Sport record.

  • The current most powerful Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport has up to 761 PS and 1050 Nm.

In what is the most typical Porsche thing to do, the German carmaker took its upcoming range-topping Taycan model to the Nürburgring before its official unveiling. And guess what? The pre series Taycan smashed all the records for the fastest electric Porsche, beating its own previous record, and that of the Tesla Model S Plaid, by nearly 20 seconds!

The Taycan with no name (yet) for the model tested will be the most powerful iteration in the electric sports coupe’s lineup. For reference, the current most powerful Taycan Turbo S Sport has an output of up to 761 PS and 1050 Nm and is good for a 0-100 kmph time of 2.8 seconds. Seems like it wasn’t powerful or quick enough for the peeps at Stuttgart, hence the development of this new range-topping model.

To put this new record into context, the pre-series Taycan’s time of 7:07.55 minutes is a whopping 26 seconds faster than that of the Taycan Turbo S Sport sedan (with the performance package), which was set back in 2022. Both times, the car was being pushed to the limits by Porsche’s development driver Lars Kern.

‘’Twenty-six seconds is half an eternity in motorsport. Lars’ lap time of 7:07.55 minutes on the Nordschleife is sensational, putting the Taycan in the same league as electric hypercars,” said Kevin Giek, head of the Taycan product line

Well said, Kevin. And it does come in the same league as electric hypercars, with the Rimac Nevera clocking the “Green Hell” in 7:05:29 minutes. Hypercar bully, this upcoming Taycan. Tesla’s Model S Plaid took 7:25.23 minutes. A point to note, though, was that the Taycan was able to churn out similar timings, lap after lap. This indicates that the performance of the powertrain was consistent and did not depreciate after some time, which sometimes is the case with performance EVs.

Not much is known about the upcoming Taycan model, except for this record time. But the initial pictures suggest a revised bumper, some tweaked aero, and, of course, the very apparent spoiler at the rear for some much-loved downforce. That said, Porsche did divulge that the pre-production prototype was fitted with a roll cage and bucket seats, the former which could be deleted in the final production model.

An on-board video of the complete lap will be published in mid-March, says Porsche.

In India, Porsche retails the Taycan between Rs 1.60 crore and Rs 2.43 crore (ex-showroom). Given that the top-spec Turbo S is sold on our shores, we won’t rule out Porsche bringing this new Taycan model to India. For now, the Taycan locks horns with the Audi e-tron GT and Mercedes-AMG EQS sedan in India.
