It took almost an hour and 210 laps worth of drifting for the Taycan to set the benchmark

The Porsche Taycan Is Now A Guinness World Record Holder highlights
  • The drift record stands at 42.1km with an average speed of 46kmph.

  • The record was set at the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC), Hockenheimring.

  • The rear-wheel drive Taycan was piloted by Porsche instructor Dennis Retera.

  • This record attempt hints at the rear-wheel drive Taycan variant coming soon.

  • India is expected to get the Taycan by 2021.

The Porsche Taycan has been no stranger to creating records, already holding the lap record for a four-door EV at the Nurburgring circuit with a lap time of 7:42. Well, now the electric sedan has made another one, becoming the longest drifting electric vehicle as per the Guinness World Records book.

The record was set at the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) in Hockenheimring with Porsche instructor Dennis Retera behind the wheel of a production-spec rear-wheel drive Taycan. After completing 210 laps and 55 minutes on the 200m drift circle, the Taycan set the longest continuous drift record at 42.1km with an average speed of 46kmph.

Another interesting tidbit about the record run was that the Taycan utilised a rear-wheel drivetrain. This falls in line with earlier reports that a more affordable rear-wheel drive Taycan with a smaller battery is in the works. So you could say that it's a sneaky way to market a new Taycan variant and hint at the rear-wheel drive Taycan being introduced pretty soon.

While the Porsche Taycan has laid down the marker for being the slipperiest EV around, it's still a fair bit away from the all-time continuous drift record of 374.1 km set by the BMW M5. That said, it's a heck of a marker to lay down.

Back home, we expect Porsche to bring the Taycan over to the country by 2021. No word yet on which variant the Taycan will be offered in, but we expect the 4S as well as the rear-wheel drive trims to be available.
