The new trim slots in between the XM and XT trims

Tata has launched a new XMS trim for the Harrier, priced from Rs 17.2 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. It sits between the XM and XT trims and is offered with both manual and automatic transmission options. The new trim gets all the equipment found in the lower-spec XM trim and borrows a few features from the higher XT trim.

Variants

Tata Harrier XM/XMA

Tata Harrier XMS/XMAS

Tata Harrier XT/XTA+

Price (MT)

Rs 16.10 lakh

Rs 17.2 lakh

Rs 17.40 lakh

Price (AT)

Rs 17.40 lakh

Rs 18.5 lakh

Rs 19.5 lakh

The XMS trim commands a premium of Rs 1.1 lakh over the XM trim for both manual and automatic variants. In comparison with the XT trim, the manual XMS variant is more affordable by Rs 20,000, while the automatic variant cuts it by Rs 1 lakh.

The SUV is powered using a 2-litre diesel engine with an output of 170PS and 350Nm. It is paired with either a standard six-speed MT or a six-speed torque converter transmission option.

What’s on offer?

The XMS variant of the Harrier gets the addition of a panoramic sunroof, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an eight-speaker music system, reverse parking camera, and electrically adjustable ORVMs over the XM trim. Other features also include a seven-inch infotainment system and multiple drive modes (eco, city, sport). Passenger safety equipment onboard the SUV comprise dual-airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold control, stability control (ESP), traction control, and roll-over mitigation.

What’s missing?

The XMS trim does miss out on a few features offered on the XT trim, like the air purifier, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, electrically foldable ORVMs, automatic climate control, and push button start. Even the XT trim does not feature the panoramic sunroof as it is present in the XT+ trim (Rs 18.2 lakh) and above.

The XMS trim builds on the XM trim and adds a whole lot of features to it, justifying the price bump. However, considering the Rs 20,000 gap between the manual XMS and XT trims, it makes one dwell over the value proposition of the latter.
