Big changes in the pipeline for the next-gen Mercedes-Benz SUV to keep it up with the times

The next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLC is in its final phase of its testing in the winters of Sweden ahead of its debut later this year. A SUV sliding around does give goosebumps for enthusiasts, but that’s not the point here, as Mercedes-Benz has unravelled the important features and specifications, giving us an idea of what to expect.

But first, let’s start with its design, which seems more revolutionary than evolutionary. Up front, the familiar Mercedes-Benz grille is larger, while the headlights are smaller, making it look bolder. Plus, the front bumper sports aggressively styled air intakes for a sportier look. The profile seems identical, though the rear haunch is now chunkier than before. At the rear, the familiarity is expected to continue with sleeker LED tail lamps.

It’s on the inside where the GLC takes the game a notch higher as it now features the crisp 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system from the C-Class and S-Class. Not only does it add a techy vibe, it makes the cabin look thoroughly up to the times. Plus, the SUV will get the 12.3-inch digital driver’s display as well.

But most importantly, the GLC will get  Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, trailer manoeuvring system, and park assistance. These systems will work in collaboration with radars and the 360-degree camera for its functionality.

All engines underneath the hood are now cleaner as they will be hybridised. The standard choice is a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine (up to 258PS and 440Nm) and a 2-litre diesel (up to 265PS and 550Nm). Both these engines will be clubbed with a 23PS/250Nm starter-alternator motor with 48V electric architecture. Plus, there will be a  plug-in hybrid option too, whose electric motor develops 136PS/440Nm offered with two petrol and one diesel engine.

The current GLC has been a decent seller for Mercedes-Benz India and the next-gen model will be on the cards for our market. When launched, expect it to be priced above the existing model, which starts from Rs 61 lakh. It will renew its rivalry with the Audi Q5 , BMW X3, and the Volvo XC60.
