Quick News Highlights:

- The upcoming electric scooter will be based on an all-new platform
- It could get a swingarm-mounted motor
An electric version of the Honda Activa has been in development for the last few years. And now in an interview with another publication at the 64th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Tsutsumu Otani, CEO, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Ltd. confirmed that the Honda Activa Electric will be launched in March 2025.
The petrol-powered Activa has been the best-selling scooter in India for the past two decades and Honda is likely trying to replicate the learnings from that scooter into the electric version. The upcoming Activa Electric is expected to be a mass-market product and as such, it is expected to be priced aggressively as well. A few months ago, as per reports published online, we got to know that the Japanese manufacturer was adding two manufacturing lines at its factories in Gujarat and Karnataka to increase the production capacity and that the Activa Electric’s production is set to begin at the Karnataka facility by December 2024.

The upcoming Activa Electric will be based on an all-new platform called ‘Platform E’ and according to the patent drawings surfaced online before, it will get a swingarm-mounted motor. This also aligns with Honda’s approach of launching a mass-market electric vehicle. As an EV, the upcoming scooter is expected to get features like a touchscreen instrument console, Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, hill-hold assist, reverse mode, riding modes, and maybe a keyless functionality as well. Since it’ll be a family-oriented scooter, it should also get adequate underseat storage space, a glove box at the front apron, and storage hooks.
The Honda Activa Electric could also be compatible with the Honda e:Swap battery swapping network. It is already operational at the metro stations and HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) petrol stations in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Japanese manufacturer could expand the network across the country by March 2025 to provide adequate charging infrastructure for the electric scooter and increase its appeal to prospective customers.
The upcoming Honda Activa Electric is expected to be priced between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom). It will rival the likes of the Ola S1 Air, Ather Rizta, Vida V1 Pro and the Bajaj Chetak.
