Are you in the market looking for your very first car? If yes, then 2025 is actually a pretty exciting time to start shopping. It’s not just about tiny hatchbacks anymore. Sure, they’re still the go-to, but micro-SUVs and tall-boy designs are stealing the show too, thanks to their practicality, safety, and modern gadgets. We’ve rounded up five models across different body styles and budgets that make real sense for first-time buyers. These picks balance affordability, low running costs, and day-to-day ownership, so you’re not just buying a car; you’re picking a companion that’ll make life a little easier (and more fun).
Price: Rs 4.99- Rs 6.95 lakh
The WagonR may not win beauty contests, but it wins where it matters: practicality. With two petrol engine choices, a 1-litre (68 PS/91 Nm) and a 1.2-litre (91 PS/114 Nm), plus AMT and factory-fitted CNG options, it’s all about flexibility. The boot space is 335 litres, which is massive for a hatchback, and the tall-boy design ensures unmatched headroom and visibility.

Features include a touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted controls, and six airbags, though the cabin feels utilitarian. The WagonR’s biggest strengths are its low running costs, easy ingress/egress, and Maruti’s service and resale clout. The cons? It’s not exciting to drive, the design is polarising, and safety ratings aren’t great. But for city-dwellers wanting a cheap-to-run, spacious first car, the WagonR still does the job like nothing else.
Price: Rs 5.47- Rs 7.92 lakh
The Grand i10 Nios takes the budget hatchback and adds some polish. It’s powered by a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with 83 PS and 114 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual or AMT. It’s smooth and refined, though not as punchy as the Swift. Boot space is 260 litres, about average, but the rear seat is comfortable enough for three in a pinch.

Hyundai nails the features game: touchscreen infotainment with connected tech, wireless charging, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and a decent safety kit with up to six airbags. It feels more premium inside than rivals, and ride quality is supple over bad roads. On the flip side, higher trims can get expensive, and resale isn’t as bulletproof as Maruti. But if you’re buying your first car and want it to feel like more than just a budget compromise, the Nios is a smart upgrade.
Price: Rs 5.50- Rs 9.24 lakh
The Punch is Tata’s micro-SUV that tries to give first-time buyers a taste of the SUV lifestyle. Priced from Rs 5.50 lakh, it gets a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 88 PS and 115 Nm, offered with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT. The performance is adequate rather than exciting, but the tall stance, 187 mm ground clearance, and chunky design give it big-car vibes. The 366 litres of boot space are surprisingly generous for its size.

However, inside, the car feels solid and spacious, with features like a digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic AC, and connected tech options. Most importantly, it scored a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating back in 2021 under the older protocols. Its electric derivative, though, received 5 stars from Bharat NCAP this year. Downsides? The engine could use more punch (pun intended), and the AMT feels jerky. But if you want your first car to look tough, feel safe, and handle rough roads with ease, the Punch is an easy recommendation.
Price: Rs 5.79- Rs 8.80 lakh
The Swift has been India’s first-car poster boy for nearly two decades, and in its latest avatar, it still makes sense. Powered by a new Z-Series 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine making 81 PS and 112 Nm, the Swift feels peppy enough for city sprints and highway dashes. You can spec it with a 5-speed manual or AMT, both tuned for easy everyday use. The boot at 265 litres is usable for weekend bags but not road-trip ready, and rear seat space is adequate rather than generous.

What keeps the Swift on this list is its balance; it offers decent features like a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, climate control, and 6 airbags as standard. More importantly, it comes with Maruti’s unmatched service network and resale value. Downsides? Lower trims feel barebones, and safety ratings haven’t matched Tata rivals. But if you want a first car that’s stylish, fun to drive, and painless to own, the Swift is still a default pick.
Price: Rs 7.26- Rs 12.46 lakh
The Venue might be one of Hyundai’s smallest SUVs, but it’s also one of the most well-rounded first-car options out there. Buyers can choose from a frugal 1.2-litre petrol (83 PS/114 Nm), a punchy 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (120 PS/172 Nm with MT/DCT), or a 1.5-litre diesel (116 PS/250 Nm). It’s not the roomiest at the back, and the 355-litre boot is average, but the cabin feels premium, ergonomically sound, and loaded with features like an 8-inch touchscreen, connected tech, wireless charging, ventilated seats, and even a Bose sound system on top trims.

Hyundai has also made six airbags standard across the range, a big win for safety-conscious first-time buyers. Add in ABS, ESC, hill-hold assist, and TPMS, and the Venue feels like a safe bet despite no fresh Global NCAP rating. Yes, rear-seat space is tight, and Hyundai’s after-sales can be pricier, but for those who want a subcompact SUV that feels more “grown-up” than a hatchback without breaking the bank, the Venue is hard to ignore.
If safety and SUV-like presence top your list, the Tata Punch and Hyundai Venue are the strongest contenders, one affordable and compact, the other more premium and feature-loaded. For style and that fun-to-drive factor, the Maruti Suzuki Swift continues to be the no-brainer. Buyers chasing a premium cabin and creature comforts will gravitate towards the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, while the Maruti Suzuki WagonR still nails practicality and low running costs like nothing else.
