The Rumion has been launched in South Africa, before making its way to India. Here are all the differences between both models

The Toyota Rumion, which is nothing but a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, is set to be launched on our shores this festive season. It went on sale in South Africa first, and Toyota India has divulged the specifications and images, revealing a handful of differences between the India-spec and South Africa-spec models.

And that’s what we’ll be talking about in this story. So without further ado, let's get cracking:

Looks

No changes here as both models look ditto when it comes to design. The Rumion gets an Innova Hycross-inspired grille and a tweaked bumper to differentiate it from the Ertiga. It also rolls on a different set of alloys, while the Toyota and Rumion badging are the only changes at the rear.

There is one difference, though, and that’s colours. The Rumion in South Africa gets two extra hues: black and red. Shades such as blue, brown, grey, silver and white are similar between the two with slight variations.

Interior

The dashboard design and layout between both the models are exactly the same. However, the South African model gets an all-black hue that looks sporty, while the India-spec model features a brown-beige dual-tone hue that looks elegant. Both models are 7-seaters, but there are minor variations in the equipment list, which brings us to the next point.

Common features between the two include halogen projector headlights, automatic climate control, cruise control, a coloured multi-info display, keyless entry with push button start, ISOFIX child-seat mounts for the second row, electronic stability control and hill start assist.

However, the South African model gets a slightly larger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay vs the India-spec’s smaller 7-inch unit with wireless smartphone connectivity. There is also one change in the safety department: 2 airbags in the international model vs 4 airbags in India.

Engine

On paper, both engines might be similar with almost equal power. But the Rumion in South Africa gets Maruti’s older K15B unit as against the India-spec’s K15C engine. The advantage is that we also get a much better 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters against the ancient 4-speed unit offered there.

Also, the India-spec Rumion gets a CNG option, which isn’t offered in the South African model.

Take a look at the specifications of both models here:

Expected Price And Rivals

The Toyota Rumion is expected to go on sale in India in the festive season and we suspect its pricing to be in the same ballpark as the Ertiga, which starts from Rs 8.64 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from its donor car, it will go up against the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Kia Carens and Mahindra Marazzo.
