New Yamaha X-MAX 125 Unveiled

Yamaha has finally unveiled an updated version of the X-MAX 125 maxi scooter. Since its debut in 2006, Yamaha has sold over 140,000 units of the X-MAX 125. However, the recent implementation of Euro-IV emission norms has led the company to give the scooter a refresh for the upcoming year.

So what’s changed?

The Yamaha X-MAX 125 is powered by a Euro-IV-compliant single-cylinder, 124cc engine which produces 14.2PS of power and 11.94Nm of torque at 6750 rpm. The 2018 model gets LED headlamps and tail lamps, traction control and ABS for both the front and rear wheel. It also comes with telescopic forks and a larger 15-inch front wheel for better manoeuvrability. 

Yamaha has now added some very user-friendly features like keyless ignition system. Even the under-seat storage can fit two full face helmets. If that’s not enough, Yamaha is also offering an additional accessory top box. The screen is now adjustable, and so are the handlebars. The scooter also gets a digital instrument cluster with an LCD screen. You also get a 12V socket on the left-side storage compartment to charge your device on the go. 

Thanks to the new Euro-IV compliant engine, the Yamaha X-MAX 125 is not only a practical option but also an economic one. The updated 125cc maxi scooter joins the range that consists of the X-MAX 200 and the X-MAX 300. The 2018 X-MAX 125 scooter will be available in four different colour options - Radical Red, Sonic Grey, Phantom Blue and Blazing Grey. Yamaha has still not announced the pricing of the new model.

Indian Connection?

ZigWheels readers might remember that Yamaha had showcased the NMax scooter during last year’s Auto Expo. While there have been rumours that Yamaha might bring the NMax to India, it’s almost two years now and there is still no sign of the maxi scooter. Powering the NMax is a 155cc, liquid-cooled motor producing 15PS of power and 14.4Nm of torque. While pricing the NMax right would have been a major hurdle for Yamaha, we believe bringing the X-MAX 125 to India would make better financial sense for the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer. 

Of course, Yamaha will have to skip features such as traction control, ABS, and keyless ignition to keep its price under check. It’s also possible that they could de-tune the 125cc engine to offer better fuel efficiency. Apart from the maxi scooter, the company could even bring the 125cc motor here to compete with the Honda Activa 125 and the Suzuki Access 125. While the Yamaha X-MAX does look tempting on paper, it still remains to be seen if the Japanese two-wheeler giant will take a bold step and introduce the scooter in India. And that’s something we will come to know only at the 2018 Auto Expo.
