When we say ‘Best Scooter’ we mean the best scooter in its class, irrespective of when it was launched. Scooters have witnessed significant growth in India over the last decade and have proved to be as desirable to the masses as commuter motorcycles.

The scooter segment may act as the perfect alternative to public transport, but its popularity lies in its practicality and affordability. Honda Activa 6G:
India’s best selling scooter has been thoroughly reworked for 2020 -- from a new butter-smooth motor, tweaked components and better hardware to a host of features. It has it all. The refinement levels of the fuel-injected engine and the absolutely silent start of the ACG motor might especially get you hooked. On the downside, you’re shelling out almost Rs 8,000 more for a scooter that isn’t all that exciting to ride.

Pros:

• Finally gets a telescopic fork.
• Packs a very refined motor.
• Features an external fuel filler.

Cons:

• Weak performance.
• No front disc, even as an option.
• No USB charging port or boot light as an option.

TVS Jupiter BS6:
Honda’s nemesis, the BS6 TVS Jupiter also makes the list and for good reason. It’s an excellent option in the 110cc space and offers plenty of kit to make its mark. It's not only 15 per cent more fuel-efficient (claimed) than its BS4 model but also offers practical bits like 21-litres of underseat storage, a cubby hole with an optional apron-mounted USB charger, retractable hooks, and a neat looking LED headlamp. And we simply love the elegant colour options for the Jupiter Classic variant. That said, the BS6 update comes at a premium of Rs 6,100 over the BS4 Jupiter.

Pros:

• Gets LED headlamp as standard.
• With a 21-litre underseat storage and a 2-litre apron-mounted compartment, the scooter is quite practical.
• 12-inch wheels on both ends ensure good ride quality.

Cons:

• No front disc even as an option.
• Design hasn’t evolved much over time.

Honda Dio BS6:
The trendy little Honda Dio gets sharper for 2020. It’s essentially a Honda Activa 6G underneath, but it’s got more youthful bodywork and it's been tuned slightly differently. Its feature list includes a full-LED headlight, a full-digital instrument console with a 3-step Eco indicator (DLX variant), silent starter, external fuel filler, and engine kill switch. All of this for around Rs 6,300 more than the BS4 model.

Yamaha Fascino 125:
Yamaha stepped into the 125cc scooter space with the Fascino 125-Fi. It looks more mature for 2020 and comes with multiple colour options, but the highlight has to be its new 125cc fuel-injected motor. It’s more powerful and fuel-efficient than before, all while weighing just 99kg kerb (4kg lighter than before), making it the lightest 125cc scooter in India.

Pros:

• New 125cc fuel-injected motor.
• Revised ergonomics for a comfortable ride.
• Number of colour options to choose form.

Cons:

• Lacks features compared to its rivals.
• Doesn’t look all that different from the older model.

Honda Activa 125 BS6:
The Honda Activa 125 was the first two-wheeler to comply with BS6 emission norms. But the healthy new heart wasn’t the only update. Honda went the extra mile to ensure its customers received more for the asking price. Essentially, the scooter has been updated with an external fuel filler cap, an ACG starter with ESP technology for super quiet starts, Tumble flow technology which offers better fuel-efficiency, Idling Stop System, and a revised instrument console.

Pros:

• Gets an ACG silent starter.
• Offers 13 per cent (claimed) better fuel efficiency.
• Comes with Idling Stop System.

 Cons:

• Performance not up to par with other 125cc scooters.
• No USB charging port or boot light as an option.

Suzuki Access 125 BS6:
The BS6 Suzuki Access 125 steps things up a notch compared to the BS4 Access which was already a benchmark in the segment. The motor feels even more refined than before with the suspension setup that gobbles up almost anything you throw at it. While the scooter looks almost identical to the BS4 model, it sets itself apart with a new LED headlight and a revised instrument console.

Pros

• Manages to put out the same power as before despite being BS6 compliant.
• Still one of the most refined scooters in India.
• Superb ride quality -- soaks up bumps really well.

Cons

• External fuel-filler cap isn’t exactly convenient. It still requires you to get off the scooter to unlock it.
• Brakes are not as sharp as some of its competition.
• The design is starting to feel dated.

TVS NTorq 125 BS6:
Sleek, powerful, trendy and feature-laden are words that perfectly describe the NTorq 125. It’s been updated to meet BS6 standards and even gets a Race Edition that offers a sporty livery, a full-LED headlight, and hazard lamps (segment-first). Its full-digital instrument cluster continues to offer smartphone connectivity for a host of features including turn-by-turn navigation. However, the updated motor does come at a price, almost Rs 10,000 more than the BS4 model.

Pros

• Gets a powerful refined motor.
• Digital display offers Bluetooth connectivity and a host of information.
• Well-balanced suspension setup.

Cons

• The seat is on the softer side and isn't meant for long hauls.
• Brakes lack bite and feel.

Aprilia SR 160 BS6:
While pretty much every scooter in India, no matter how sporty, tries its best to not compromise on the practicalities of being a scooter, the Aprilia SR range pretty much doubles down on the sportiness aspect. The company’s latest flagship scooter, the SR160 now boasts increased engine capacity, fuel injection, and bumped up power and torque figures of 11PS and 11.6Nm respectively -- that’s 0.8 PS and 1.7Nm more than the BS4 model! The SR160 is undoubtedly the most powerful scooter on sale in India today.

Pros

• Updated motor offers more performance than before.
• Fuel-injection makes for a smoother motor.
• Best handling scooter in the country.

Cons:

• Lacks features.
• Ride quality is still too stiff.
