Hyundai Bayon Short Review: Why Does It Exist?

The recent launch of the Hyundai Bayon has further spiced up the competition in the compact SUV segment in which the Creta has been a long-standing leader. With the Creta soon to grow in size thanks to an imminent generation update, the Bayon will sit right below to keep the price accessibility in check.
The Bayon offers a strong proposition with features, style and, moreover, great comfort. We drove the Hyundai Bayon recently, and these are the top 5 things we loved about the Hyundai Bayon:
The Bayon is among the sleek and premium-looking SUVs in the segment. For those who don’t prefer the large size or bulbous design that many in the segment have, this might be appealing to them. The slim LED lighting theme and the muscular proportions on the bonnet and on the wheel arches.

The Bayon carries a sleek and aggressive look, and mind you, it looks larger in real life compared to the pictures. And so it also has good road presence.
Given the reputation of the badge, you can be assured of getting a premium-feeling interior. And the Bayon doesn’t disappoint. The use of premium materials like cloth finish on the dashboard, leatherette finishes on the door pads, armrest and steering wheel, and the quality of plastics make you feel like you’ve got your money’s worth.

Moreover, features like the curved dual-display, panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting further add to the premium quotient on the Bayon’s interior.
One of Bayon’s strong characters is comfort. The combination of the size and shape of the seats and the comfort-biased suspension makes it a great car to travel in.

Moreover, these seats offer good thigh support and a relaxed position. The space is also nothing to complain about. The rear-seat passengers have ample knee room and headroom, which will also make taller passengers comfortable.
You read that right. It is true in two senses. First, Hyundai’s IVT mimics gears, which makes driving it feel more familiar and natural thanks to the sound and feel of ‘gears’. Secondly, unlike many CVTs, which suffer from the rubber-band effect that takes time to actually get you moving when you stamp on the throttle, this system has a Dash mode which eliminates most of that lag and shifts you forward immediately during a highway overtake.

Mind you, the power is not as much as turbo-petrols. However, for a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a CVT, the Bayon has respectable performance.
Hyundai are not known for being the best in suspension tuning in their cars. However, they do a decent job of getting a balance of comfort and dynamics.

However, the Bayon pushes the bar high when it comes to ride quality and suspension comfort. Despite sitting lower than the Creta in both height and positioning, the Bayon overtakes it in this department.
The suspension in the Bayon soaks up broken patches and sudden jolts well.
The Bayon is among the premium offerings in the compact SUV space. Despite sitting at the lower end of the segment, the Bayon still provides a respectable amount of comfort, premiumness and good design.
If you’re looking for a premium-feeling SUV on a budget with decent power, good features and comfort for all-round use, the Bayon is hard to fault.
