The Hyper Ultra 40 could make for a good addition to your garage if you have a spare lakh or so lying around

Hyper Bike Co. might not be a familiar name in the world of cycles, however, people following the BMX culture, especially in the US, will know the calibre of this manufacturer. This established brand in the BMX universe is now entering the world of urban commuting with the Ultra 40.

The Ultra 40 is a compact, versatile e-bike built to scoot you around the urban jungle. However, it still stays true to its BMX roots, all at a relatively reasonable price (which I will get to in a second). It is the kind of electric cycle made to be used both on roads and light off-road terrain.

The frame of the Ultra 40 is made of aluminum, which keeps prices down and durability up. It also gets a front telescopic fork and chunky 4-inch tyres wrapped around 20-inch spoke-alloy rims, with disc brakes, lending the bike a rugged aesthetic. That being said, it does not draw a parallel to an electric mountain bike, and clearly sticks to its commuting duties.

A 10.4Ah replaceable battery is built into the frame of the Ultra 40. It offers a range of only 32km on a single charge. You do have the option of buying an additional battery, or perhaps some energy drink to pedal home if your commutes are over 32km.

The Ultra 40 does impress on the performance side of things, packing a 250W hub motor capable of propelling it to a top speed of 32kmph with pedal assist. Of course, you do have the option of going beyond this speed with sheer pedal power.

Priced at USD 1,200, equivalent to Rs 96,000, the Ultra 40 is slightly on the expensive side in India, where you do get urban-focussed electric cycles like the Hero Lectro C8, Essel Energy GET 7 and the Polarity Smart Sport already.
