Mahindra has pulled the wraps off the Vision.S concept at its Freedom NU event in Mumbai, and at first glance, it’s hard to miss the bold, upright front grille and the unmistakable “S” insignia. These cues strongly suggest that this could be part of the Scorpio bloodline, perhaps a compact, sub-4-metre “baby Scorpio” designed to slot in below the full-size model.
Its stance, muscular proportions, and rugged styling details all seem to nod towards the Scorpio family’s DNA. Interestingly, there’s also a certain familiarity in its silhouette and design elements that evoke the Land Rover Defender, a resemblance that’s likely to spark plenty of conversation among SUV enthusiasts.
After weeks of cheeky teaser drops, Mahindra finally let the covers fall on the Vision S concept this Independence Day. And if you’re squinting at it thinking, “Hmm… that grille looks familiar,” you’re not alone.
Alongside the Vision S, Mahindra also pulled the wraps off the Vision X, Vision T, and Vision SXT — all part of a new Vision series that rides on the company’s fresh NU IQ platform.
The face of the Vision S is hard to ignore. Triplets of vertically stacked LEDs flank either side of the grille, forming a bridge to inverted L-shaped headlights. Below sits a chunky bumper, housing what looks like a radar unit and parking sensors, while pixel-style fog lamps, suspiciously similar to the Hyundai Nexo’s, hide in plain sight. The limb risers on the bonnet and roof-mounted lights scream “off-road adventure,” even if some of these bits don’t make it to production.

From the side, its high stance gives away its trail-friendly ambitions. There’s thick cladding along the doors and wheel arches, 19-inch alloys wrapped in chunky tyres, and red brake callipers peeking through star-shaped wheels. Cameras replace old-school ORVMs, the door handles sit flush with the body, and side steps hint at practical intent. Bonus details? A roof ladder on one side, a jerry can on the other, a proper go-anywhere attitude. Kinda reminds you of the Defender, no?

The back keeps things familiar yet fresh with inverted L-shaped tail-lamps and a quartet of pixel lights on the bumper. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel and bumper reflectors have a faint whiff of Bolero Neo about them, a subtle nod to another Mahindra workhorse.
Underneath, the Vision S sits on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform, a modular base designed to be flexible. It can stretch from 3,990 mm to 4,320 mm in length, making it equally happy under a sub-4-metre SUV or something larger. Mahindra says it’s roomy enough to offer the most spacious cabin in its category, whether you’re in the smaller or bigger version.

The platform can take a variety of powertrains, including electric, hybrid, and maybe more. With a 2,665 mm wheelbase and optimised overhangs, it’s built to handle different body styles and driving needs without breaking a sweat.
Did we tell you, it gets a flat floor, irrespective of the powertrain? Yes! Mahindra has quite a tall claim on this one.
In person, the Vision S has a strong, almost Defender-like vibe, boxy, confident, and not shy about its off-road cred. But unlike the Defender, it also wears a distinctly Mahindra face and a Scorpio badge in spirit.

Whether the production version will be as wild as the concept remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: Mahindra’s baby Scorpio could turn out to be a big deal, especially considering the fan following the Scorpio brand enjoys!
