Tata Motors has finally launched the Sierra EV in the Indian market for Rs.18.79 lakh (ex-showroom), and the electric SUV is sure to turn heads. While the ICE-powered Sierra has been on sale for a few months now, the new Sierra EV carries forward the same design DNA but with a few updates, including a new face. Tata Sierra EV vs Sierra ICE: Exterior 

The Sierra EV features a clean and modern front fascia that stays true to the SUV's retro-inspired design. It gets a blanked-off grille spanning the width of the car, housing a full-width connected LED DRL and horizontally stacked LED projector headlights below it. The bumper has also been subtly redesigned with gloss black inserts and small air dams to improve aerodynamic efficiency, while vertically stacked fog lamps and a faux silver skid plate add to its robust stance.

In comparison, the Sierra ICE gets a gloss black grille across the front that integrates the lighting elements, giving it a slightly more conventional look. Apart from this panel and minor bumper revisions, both versions share an identical overall design and maintain the unmistakable Sierra identity.

In profile, the differences are minimal. The Sierra EV gets an exclusive QWD badge on the rear C-pillar, ‘Tata.ev’ badging on the front doors, and dual-tone, aero-optimised 19-inch alloy wheels.

Other elements like the signature squared rear window, blacked-out roof insert, roof rails, gloss black cladding, and flush door handles are shared between both versions, preserving the iconic Sierra silhouette.

The rear design is virtually identical on both models, with the Sierra EV distinguished only by the 'Sierra.ev' badge on the tailgate.

Both SUVs feature connected LED taillights, a flat tailgate, an integrated spoiler, a shark fin antenna, and a muscular bumper, giving them an equally bold and commanding road presence.

On the inside, both the Sierra EV and Sierra ICE have a near-identical cabin and dashboard layout with a very minimalistic design, leatherette upholstery, premium soft-touch materials, and an illuminated gloss-black steering wheel.

One way to distinguish the EV, however, is the white and grey upholstery compared to the white and brown theme in the Sierra ICE.

Taking centre stage is a triple-screen setup that dominates the dashboard. The dashboard also offers a soundbar for the 12-speaker JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos, which is placed in a panel below the AC vents. 

Moving to the rear seats, both the Sierra EV and Sierra ICE offer a spacious seating experience with a good amount of knee room and under-thigh support, especially behind the co-driver seat, thanks to the ‘boss mode’ adjustment.

Speaking of features, the Sierra EV and Sierra ICE share most of their equipment and hence are some of the most feature-loaded cars in their respective segments. Both SUVs offer a triple screen layout with 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch passenger entertainment screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker JBL sound system with soundbar, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, thigh support extender, powered tailgate, ambient lighting, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming IRVM, a cooled glove box, multi drive modes and terrain modes, and wireless phone charger. 

The Sierra EV additionally offers a boost mode and a QWD (all-wheel drive) drivetrain on the higher variants, and they also come equipped with various off-road-specific terrain modes and off-road assist. It is also loaded with additional features like boost mode for stronger performance (limited duration), drift mode, a heads-up display with multicolour guides, memory function for the driver seat, Arcade.ev connected tech, V2L and V2V charging support, and a front frunk storage space. 

In terms of safety, the Sierra twins ensure a strong baseline of safety as they pack a long list of features like a Level-2 ADAS suite, 360-degree camera (540-Degree for Sierra EV) with front and rear sensors, 6 airbags, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, electronic stability control, traction control, hill hold control, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and all-wheel disc brakes. 

The higher variants of the Sierra EV are additionally equipped with a 540-degree camera with adaptive front and rear turn cameras and a blind spot monitor and auto park assist with over 16 features. 

The ICE-powered Sierra has already scored a full 5-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP, and the EV counterpart is expected to perform well as well. During the launch, Tata had showcased a real-world crash test scenario wherein the Sierra EV was sandwiched between two trucks, and still kept the cabin intact and safe from any major damage. 

Tata Sierra EV vs Sierra ICE: Powertrain Differences

Tata is offering the Sierra EV with a total of 2 battery pack options, which include a 63 kWh unit and a larger 75 kWh unit, which is also available with a dual-motor setup along with a QWD (all-wheel drive) setup. All of these battery packs support fast charging using a DC fast charger.

On the other hand, the ICE-powered Tata Sierra is available with three engine options: a new naturally aspirated petrol, a new turbo petrol, and a tried-and-tested diesel engine. The transmission options vary between manual, CVT, DCT, and torque converter automatic gearbox.

Tata Sierra EV vs Sierra ICE: Price & Rivals

Tata has launched the Sierra EV at an introductory price of Rs 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom), and the top-of-the-line Empowered AWD variant costs a whopping Rs 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom). 

 In comparison, prices for the Sierra ICE start at Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant with a naturally aspirated petrol engine mated to a manual transmission, and the top-end Diesel AT demands a premium of Rs 21.29 lakh (ex-showroom). 

This makes the base variant of the Sierra EV more expensive by Rs 7.3 lakh and the higher variant more expensive by 4.7 lakh.  The Sierra EV rivals includes the Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, Maruti eVitara, Toyota Ebella and MG ZS EV.
