Volvo's new XC60 4x4 will offer a choice of thirteen colours, three engines and three trims, with the ground-breaking City Safety system standard across the range, the company has confirmed. The car is available to order now, with prices running from £24,750 to £34,495.

The three engines include the high-performance six-cylinder T6 petrol (which comes only with Geartronic semi-automatic transmission) and two five-cylinder diesels, both of which have a six-speed gearbox: a manual 'box as standard, and with Geartronic a £1400 option.

The T6 is comfortably the fastest model in the range, hitting 60mph in 7.1 seconds, but also the least fuel-efficient, using a gallon of fuel every 23.7 miles. In contrast, both diesel models return an identical 37.7mpg on the combined cycle, and only differ in price and performance: the more powerful 182bhp unit adds an extra £1000 to your bill over the 161bhp unit, but takes a second off its 0-60mph time of 10.0 seconds.

Each engine is available with each of the three trim levels - S, SE and SE Lux - with the exception of the T6, which comes only with the upper two trims. Standard across the range are alloy wheels, climate control, cruise control, and an audio system with aux input and CD player. Safety features include the award-winning Volvo City Safety system (which takes action to avoid low-speed accidents in city traffic), plus Roll Stability Control, Roll Over Protection and Whiplash Protection.

SE adds Hill Descent Control, electric driver's seat and mirrors, more luxurious upholstery and chrome window trim. Finally, SE Lux brings chronographic instruments, leather upholstery and wood trim, as well as larger alloys, active bending headlamps, a powered tailgate and rear park assist.

Among the options are the Communications, Family and Winter Packs. The first (£2000) brings DVD-based sat-nav, Keyless Drive and a Bluetooth hands-free system, while the Family Pack (£260) includes two booster cushions and a passenger airbag cut-off switch, and the Winter Pack (£450) covers heated front seats, luxury floor mats and a headlamp washing system. Finally, there is the new Driver Support Pack, which includes the Blind Sport Information System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning. It costs £1700 on S-trimmed models and £1500 on SE and SE Lux.
