Affordable sedan is expected to be built on the same CMF-A+ platform as the Renault Triber

  • Will be the second affordable sedan from Renault after the Logan.
  • The CMF-A+ platform is essentially a modified version of the CMF-A platform that underpins the Renault Kwid.
  • It is expected to be an India-specific sedan with exports to markets in Latin America, South-East Asia and Africa.
  • Will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Aspire, Honda Amaze and the Volkswagen Ameo.

Renault has been on a roll this year when it comes to launching cars for the masses. It started in August with the launch of the practical Triber, its first sub-4m MPV in India. Earlier this month, it launched its second vehicle, the facelifted Renault Kwid. And now we know that Renault is working on a compact sedan to make its foray into the sub-4m segment. Could the French automaker finally find better luck in India’s affordable sedan segment? We might find out as early as the Auto Expo 2020.

The carmaker is no stranger to developing sedans for the Indian market as it had introduced the Logan sedan in India, which didn’t garner much success. It was then rebadged and relaunched in the market as the Mahindra Verito, but it still failed to gain popularity. Then there were the Scala and the Fluence sedans. This time, however, the carmaker is planning to go a different route with the new sedan slated to be a sub-4m product.

Reports suggest that Renault’s new sedan is expected to be India-specific, with the car being made in India and exported to Latin America and South-East Asia. The new sedan is also expected to be shipped to African markets. It will be based on the same CMF-A+ platform as the Renault Triber. This platform is essentially a modified version of the CMF-A platform, which underpins the Renault Kwid in India.

While there is no word yet on a launch timeline for Renault’s new sedan, it is likely to be a long wait with a possible 2021 debut. The new sedan might take on the highly competitive sub-4m segment, which is dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. It is also likely to rival other sub-4m sedans including the Hyundai Xcent, Ford Aspire, Honda Amaze and the Volkswagen Ameo in the Indian market. No word on the price, but with Renault’s recent track record of aggressively pricing its models, we expect the same for the new sub-4m sedan.
