The Indian government has been aggressively pushing the adoption of ethanol-blended fuels to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower emissions. As a result, manufacturers have been working on vehicles capable of running on higher ethanol blends. Hero MotoCorp has now joined the movement in a big way. While it is not the first manufacturer to introduce a flex-fuel two-wheeler in India, it has launched the mass-market E85-compliant Hero Splendor Plus Flex Fuel and Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel at prices of Rs 82,710 and Rs 72,792 (both ex-showroom, Delhi), respectively.

Hero Splendor Plus Flex Fuel
At first glance, the Splendor Flex Fuel looks almost identical to the standard Hero Splendor Plus. The overall design, body panels and silhouette remain unchanged. The only noticeable differences come in the form of fresh graphics that help distinguish it from the regular model.

The biggest change lies underneath. The motorcycle is now E85 compliant, meaning it can run on fuel containing up to 85 percent ethanol. Powering the bike is the same 97.2cc single-cylinder engine as the standard model. It produces 8.57PS and 8.3Nm, which is 0.55PS and 0.25Nm more than the regular Splendor.
Apart from the updated engine calibration and fuel-system components required for ethanol compatibility, the rest of the motorcycle remains unchanged. It continues to use the same chassis, telescopic fork, twin rear shock absorbers and drum brake setup as the standard bike.
Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel
Just like its sibling, the Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel retains the familiar design of the standard motorcycle. The commuter gets revised graphics and exclusive colour options, but the overall styling remains largely unchanged.
The key highlight is its E85-compatible powertrain. The bike continues to use the familiar flex fuel-compliant engine as the Splendor making similar power and torque figures.

Hero has also retained the same hardware package as the regular model. Suspension duties are handled by telescopic fork and twin rear shock absorbers, while braking is taken care of by drum brakes at both ends.
ZigSays
While India already has the flex-fuel version of the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 on sale, it remains a relatively niche product. The arrival of flex-fuel versions of two of the country’s most popular commuter motorcycles, the Splendor Plus and HF Deluxe, is a much bigger step towards mainstream adoption of ethanol-based fuels. These motorcycles have the potential to bring flex-fuel technology to the masses, and we hope more manufacturers follow suit by introducing ethanol-compatible versions of their top-selling products.
