William Shakespear once famously asked, “What's in a name?”. Such a simple question, but one with the power to undo arbitrary titles. Triumph seems to be making a similar line of inquiry as it renames its Street Twin and Street Scrambler 900, graduating them to the title of ‘Speed Twin 900’ and ‘Scrambler 900’ respectively. Such a random move, one with the potential of backlash from existing customers, no? Then why would the British bikemaker apply for such a change in a certification it submitted in Australia?
Renaming a model post a major upgrade is common industry practice, but this move could be part of a larger brand plan that’s at play for Triumph. Back in 2017, Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles announced a partnership which was later confirmed by a deal signed by the duo in January of 2020. The deal would have Bajaj Auto develop a new range of 200-750cc motorcycles for Triumph which it will retail in India and abroad. The first of its kind was to be a two lakh Rupee, quarter-litre motorcycle. This new range would potentially help Triumph dip its toes in the faster selling, low to mid capacity segment and drive sales up like never before.

With Triumph, traditionally speaking, the ‘Street’ moniker denoted accessibility and ‘Speed’ required you to reach deeper into your wallets. Then it introduced the Street Twin line of motorcycles which became the first step in the Triumph ladder for buyers. By that logic, it’s safe to assume the British bikemaker is making way for its new motorcycles to carry the ‘Street’ legacy ahead. Hence, graduating the existing 900cc, Street Twin range a notch above the accessible mark makes a lot of sense. So does that mean we’ll see a Triumph Street 250 manufactured by Bajaj some time soon? Let’s wait and watch!
