This Honda Scooter Looks Cute, And Has An Indian Connection

Honda has been known to patent various international products in India including ones from the Southeast Asian markets. Newest on this list is the new design patent of the popular Scoopy scooter in India.  

The Honda Scoopy

The Honda Scoopy is a staple from the brand’s Southeast Asia lineup of scooters. The funky-looking neo-retro scooter’s engine is actually based on the same heart as the Honda Activa, although in a slightly more powerful tune. The Scoopy makes 9PS and 9.2Nm as compared to the Activa’s 8PS and 9.05Nm. Also, what makes Scoopy more ‘fun’ is its light kerb weight of just 93kg. For perspective, the Activa weighs 106kg. The light kerb weight, when paired with its 12-inch alloys should make the Scoopy a great scooter to putter around the town.  

While it's not the first time Honda has patented the Scoopy in India, the older generation version of the scooter was patented back in 2022. In fact, Honda even tested the scooter on our roads back in 2017. The design patent this time around is that of the updated model, which gets a new LED headlight and a digital instrument console as standard. 

As mentioned earlier, Honda does patent quite a lot of its products from various markets around the world. The brand patented various two-wheelers such as CB500R, Vario, the PCX160, CBR250RR, among others. Credit where it’s due, the manufacturer recently launched a few of its big-bikes in India that too, in their latest avatars. 

As for the Honda Scoopy, as fun of a scooter as it sounds, the design patent is only to secure Honda’s legal rights, so it is unlikely to be launched in India. Honda did try something different with the Cliq and the Navi - both properly funky-looking two-wheelers. But they didn’t do as well as the manufacturer had hoped, and hence were discontinued soon after. 

It seems like India likes scooters that don’t deviate from conventional design, and the Honda Activa’s insane sales numbers month after month is a testament to this belief.
