The marque has showcased two all-new turbo-petrol engines at Auto Expo 2023 that are E20-compliant and comply with the more stringent second phase of BS6 regs

  • Tata reveals 125PS 1.2-litre and 170PS 1.5-litre T-GDI petrol engines.
  • They comply with phase two of BS6 emissions and E20 fuel.
  • The engines are made out of aluminium.
  • ICE-powered Curvv concept featured the 1.2-litre unit.

There’s no doubt that Tata Motors’ stall at Auto Expo 2023 is the most exciting of the lot, for there are plentiful concepts and electric vehicles on display. The carmaker has so far taken the wraps off the ICE-powered Curvv concept, showcased an evolved Sierra EV along with the Harrier EV, and so on.

But, it’s not just cars that Tata was focusing on, as it has revealed two brand-new turbocharged petrol engines as well and they are the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre T-GDI (Turbo-Gasoline Direct Injection) units. To make life easier for you, here are the detailed specifications of both units:

Tata 1.2-litre T-GDI

Tata 1.5-litre T-GDI

Engine

1,199cc three-cylinder T-GDI

1,498cc four-cylinder T-GDI

Power (PS)

125PS

170PS

Torque (Nm)

225Nm

280Nm

So, there are a couple of important points you need to know about these engines. Both engines will comply with the more stringent second phase of BS6 emission standards set to kick in soon. Also, these engines are E20-compliant, meaning they can run on flex-fuel comprising 20 per cent ethanol.

Then there are the technical bits. Both engines have an aluminium construction, so you can expect them to be quite refined. Also, direct injection should offer better and smoother throttle response, while advanced exhaust treatment, which, Tata says, should keep emissions in check. Tata also says it has developed consumable components like the timing chain and valvetrain with a focus on lower cost of maintenance, especially in the long run.

We expect Tata Motors to introduce these powertrains in its cars in the near future, especially considering that the more stringent second phase of BS6 emission norms are set to kick in from April. It’s yet unknown which models will get this engine, but the ICE-powered Curvv displayed at Auto Expo 2023 featured the 1.2-litre unit.
